Director Gore Verbinski, of Pirates of the Caribbean fame, is set to helm a new adaptation of the popular Parker Brothers board game Clue.
The original 1985 adaptation was titled Clue: The Movie and was distributed by Paramount. The film starred Eileen Brennan, Christopher Lloyd and Michael McKean, and became a cult hit, years after it was released in theaters.
Board Game Film Bonanza
Universal has secured the right, from toymaker Hasbro, to produce films based on popular board games. Director Ridley Scott helms an adaptation of Monopoly, while other films will focus on an Ouija Board and Candyland storyline.
Clue, The Game
The popular board game, Clue, involves a mansion where a murder has taken place. Players seek to determine who committed the murder, what weapon killed the deceased and in which room did the crime take place. The 61-year-old game has secured more than $1 billion in sales.
The Original Adaptation
The original 1985 movie was a box office failure, making less than $15 million. The film went on to become a cult success, often causing excitement, as no one knew which of three endings would be shown when the movie was viewed.First Showing: ...Another Clue Movie?
