  • The Clovis people were a civilization of prehistoric hunters that roamed across much of North America 13,100 to 12,900 years ago.National Geographic: Clovis People Not First Americans, Study Shows (February 23, 2007) The Clovis culture is defined by the distinctive spear points the people fabricated and used to hunt large game such as mammoths.

On July 20, 2009, scientists claimed that the Clovis People were wiped out by a comet that hit Eastern Canada approximately 12,900 years ago. The comet also wiped out the woolly mammoth and other early prehistoric inhabitants.http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,534137,00.html

In February 2009 artifacts from the Clovis people were found in a Denver, Colorado, backyard during a landscaping project. Buried approximately two feet below the surface, the artifacts appear to be a cache of stone-age tools, with cutting utensils still containing enough blood to identify the animals they killed. The house where the tools were found was built in 1969, but that section of the yard had remained untouched until the 2009 landscaping project. The New York Times: Colorado Backyard Yields Cache ... • What Happened?

The Clovis people are widely believed to have been wiped out, along with many other large animals including lions, mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed cats, by a sudden and widespread change in climate around 12,900 years ago. Some scientists suggest that this sudden change in climate, which caused worldwide climates to revert to glacial conditions for about 1,500 years, occurred due to a comet explosion. This explosion is theorized to have sent a massive shock wave across the Earth and set much of it on fire. New evidence for this hypothesis was detailed in a research paper published in early 2009 in the Science journal. The article describes how a thin layer of microscopic nanodiamonds has been discovered in sedimentary rock dating to approximately 12,900 years ago. These nanodiamonds could only have been created by a high-heat, high-intensity impact, such as that caused by a comet. No Clovis artifacts have been discovered above the nanodiamond layer, suggesting that whatever caused the nanodiamonds also brought about the end of the Clovis culture.Washington Post: Gems Point to Comet as Answer to Ancient Riddle (January 2, 2009)
