A clock is an instrument used to measure time.
History
The clock is one of the worlds oldest inventions. Clocks began as sundials which would determine the time of day depending on the sun's position in the sky and thus the direction of the shadow of a projection on the sundial. Sundials were fairly accurate if well constructed. They didn't work at night or on cloudy days of course. Candle clocks and hourglasses are some other ancient methods of measuring time. Candle clocks melt at a predictable rate while hourglasses leak sand at a steady rate. Water clocks, which measured time by the flow of water, as used in Babylon and ancient Egypt.
