Portis stated, "Either you feel like you need to sever ties with me—split ties with me—but don't sit here and throw me out like I don't pay attention, like I don't know what's going on, like I'm making mistakes, like I'm the problem.   • Football Career

    Portis began his career playing college football with the Miami Hurricanes. He helped the team go undefeated and win the national championship in 2001. Portis was selected 51st overall in the 2002 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. He made his NFL debut that year and recorded 1,508 yards and a career-high 15 touchdowns, leading to his NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year selection. Following the 2004 season, in which he was named to his first Pro Bowl, Portis was traded to the Washington Redskins.
