Cleveland State University is a public four year institution of higher learning offering undergraduate and graduate degrees. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the University has an average yearly enrollment of approximately 16,000 students. The University has 575 full-time faculty (93 percent have Ph.D. or highest degree in their field) and 1,000 staff members. Located on an 85 acre campus, Cleveland State has 40 buildings and two extended campuses in Westlake and Solon. The University is comprised of eight colleges including Business Administration, Education and Human Services, Engineering, Law, Liberal Arts, Science, Urban Affairs, Graduate Studies. Beyond academics, the school offers 17 varsity sports. Roughly one third of Cleveland State’s 16,000 students are in graduate level programs and about half attend on a part time basis. Cleveland State University History
Cleveland State University was founded as a state assisted university in 1964 The University acquired the buildings, staff, faculty and curriculum of Fenn College that was established in 1929 with 2,500 students. During the 1880s, the Cleveland YMCA started to offer courses to students who were unable to attend normal college classes. In 1906, the YMCA program was restructured into Association Institute and then it was reorganized as Fenn College in 1929. The historic Fenn Tower is now student housing. The Cleveland Law School was founded in 1897 and was the first law school in Ohio that held classes in the evenings. It was also one of the first schools to admit minorities and women. In 1916, another evening law school, John Marshall School of Law was founded. The two schools merged in 1946 and became the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law.
