On July 1st, 1931 Cleveland Municipal Stadium was opened for the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians. The stadium was also known as the Lakefront Stadium and the Cleveland Stadium. The stadium was built big enough to seat over 74,000 people for the baseball field and over 80,000 for the football field. The stadium was marked as one of the early multi-purpose stadiums built for both baseball and football. The stadium was voted in 1929 and needed a 2.5 million levy for a fireproof stadium on the lakefront. Many also believed the stadium was built to attract the 1932 Summer Olympics but the stadium did not receive the voted needed.
The Cleveland Indians played their first game in the Lakefront Stadium on July 31st, 1932 when they lost 1-0 to the Athletics and the great pitcher Lefty Grove. The stadium filled a then-major-league-record crowd of 80,184 people. The stadium was also held for the Browns but Cleveland Municipal Stadium was first home of the Cleveland Rams in 1936. After the season the Rams left to the National Football League and the Cleveland Browns were born in 1946. http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/american/clevel.htm
