Clemson University is a public four year institution of higher education. The Clemson Tigers are part of the Atlantic Coast Athletic Conference.
Clemson University History
Clemson University was founded by Thomas Green Clemson. Clemson, at the time of his death, left money and land for the development of an institution of higher education. The college would formally open in 1893 as a military school. In 1955, the college became a coeducational institution. In 1964, the college was renamed to Clemson University. The mission statement of the university states, "The mission of Clemson University is to fulfill the covenant between its founder and the people of South Carolina to establish a "high seminary of learning" through its historical land-grant responsibilities of teaching, research and extended public service."
