    Clemson University was founded by Thomas Green Clemson. Clemson, at the time of his death, left money and land for the development of an institution of higher education. The college would formally open in 1893 as a military school. In 1955, the college became a coeducational institution. In 1964, the college was renamed to Clemson University.
