Clearwater Scandal
In 2004, both Dominique de Villepin and Nicolas Sarkozy were running for president in France.
A list showed up that claimed to list clients with secret bankaccounts with Luxembourg-based securities trading house, Clearstream. Sarkozy was on the list. Villepin had gotten his hands on this list, but instead of turning it over to the authorities, he asked a retired general to investigate it. It was proven to be a fake, but by that time it had leaked.
