Citation was an American born and bred thoroughbred horse. He was the first horse to win 16 consecutive stakes races, and is the 8th horse in history to win the Triple Crown
The Short List
When it comes to the greatest race horses of all-time, Citation is certainly in anyone's top five. As a 3-year old, Citation produced 27 victories in 29 starts, and won the 1947 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, to win the Triple Crown. It would be 25 years until another Triple Crown winner, when Secretariat won in 1973, and only two other horses have accomplished the feat since. Citation also won 15 straight races that season, and was named horse of the year. Citation retired following the 1951 Hollywood Gold Cup, where winning that race put him over $1 million in career earnings, the first horse ever to do so.
