Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984 by Guy Lalibete and Daniel Gauthier along with twenty other street performers based out of Quebec, Canada. The acrobatic performance troupe evolved to include singers, dancers, acrobatics, multi-media and performance entertainment. In the 1980’s they traveled in Canada with their show but by the 1990’s and 2000’s they had expanded to become a major organization. Their tours have through the years have included over 200 cities throughout the world with over 90 million people viewing their shows. Along with their touring shows, they now have a permanent show at Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. They employee over 4,000 people from 40 different countries. One thousand of these employees are artists with 1,800 employees at the Montreal International Headquaters. Cirque du Soleil involves itself in communities and helps at-risk youths. In addition, it has started supporting the fight again poverty. It continues its involvement in almost 80 communities around the world and in 20 different countries on five continents.

Cirque du Soleil has a number of different shows at any given time. One of the current shows is OVO, a touring show that explores the insect world and the balance of the planet’s ecosystem. It is the 25th show created by the troupe.
Cirque has won many awards including the 1997 Bambi Award, in 1989 the Rose d’Or de Montreux, 1991 and 1998 saw a win for Drama Desk Awards and in addition, they have won three Gemini Awards, ACE, Felix and four Prime-time Emmy Awards.
