An Atlanta native, James was signed by his hometown team in the 2002 draft, and he made his debut with the team in 2005. The following year, James became a dependable starter, compiling a respectable 11-4 record and a 3.78 ERA. His .733 winning percentage that year was the best in the National League. James cooled down somewhat in 2007, as his ERA ballooned to 4.24, and his won-loss record evened out at 11-10. James also led the National League in home runs allowed, with 32. Despite making a six-figure salary with the Braves, James returned to an off-season job working as a window and door installer at Lowe's in Atlanta, Georgia.
