After a troubled childhood growing up in St. Louis, Missouri (that included a conviction for armed robbery), Berry began playing the blues in clubs around the area and was influenced by the songs of Muddy Waters. After meeting Waters in Chicago, Berry signed with Chess Records and released the hit single "Maybellene".
  • Stardom

With the release of the song "Roll Over Beethoven" in 1956 (it eventually hit #29 on the charts), Berry began to gain fame as one of the new breed of Rock n' Roll musicians, including Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. The next few years saw Berry release a string of top-10 hits, including "Johnny B. Goode", "Rock and Roll Music" and "Sweet Little Sixteen".
