The Sun Stone

  1. TIP: This quest involves a fiery showdown. Because of this, it is advisable to warp to 65,000,000 B.C. and trade the old man in the bartering hut for Ruby Armor (Ayla will refer to its availability when you talk to her at the End of Time). This armor reduces all fire damage by 80%. To obtain this you must collect 10 of each prehistoric item (feather, petal, horn, fang). Go to the Hunting Range to earn some of these items. Remember the Nu that appears when it rains will give you 3 of each when you defeat it. You will want to obtain at least two Ruby Armors for the task ahead.
  2. Board the Epoch and travel to 2300 A.D.
  3. Travel to the island in the south-southwest portion of the map. Land and enter the Sun Temple.
  4. TIP: Before you proceed any further, make sure at least two of your party members are equipped with Ruby Armor. The third should use the Red Plate you recovered from the sealed chests (see the Guide to Sealed Chests and Doors for its location). Remember the Red Plate absorbs all fire damage.
  5. Run forward into the room until you reach the blue twinkling dot. The Son of Sun will now appear and attack.
  6. The Son of Sun can be a difficult fight. However, since you equipped the right armor this fight should be more manageable. Here are some tips on how to deal with the Son of Sun:
    1. First of all, do not attack the Son itself. You will deal it no damage and it will retaliate with a Flare attack and does about 100 HP to each party member (assuming they are equipped with Ruby Armor).
    2. Five flames called Prominence encircle the Son. You can attack each of these flames individually. Do not use magic on them for they will gain HP from the spell instead of losing it. Also, do not use any attacks that will target all five flames at once. Every time the incorrect flame is hit, the Son will counterattack with a flame that targets the attacker. If you hit them all at once then the combined counterattacks of all the flames may very well kill your attacking character (unless they are equipped with the Red Plate).
    3. The key to defeating the Son is that one of the five flames that surround him are weaker than the other four. If you hit this flame with a physical attack it will deal about 200 HP in damage to the Son itself. The trouble is that you do not know which flame is the correct one.
    4. Use the character with the Red Plate as a guinea pig to determine which flame is the right one to attack. Each time he or she hits the wrong flame, the Son will counterattack. Since the character is immune to fire, however, the Son's attacks will have no effect. When you discover the right flame, use all three party members to unload upon it with physical attacks.
    5. Eventually the Son of Sun will spin its five flames like a roulette wheel. Repeat the above process to identify the correct flame. Keep attacking in this manner and eventually the Son of Sun will retreat.
    6. TIP: Even though you will not have to worry about his fire attacks due to your armor, the Son does have a laser attack that can deal 300+ HP in damage to a single party member. Because of this, it is wise to keep your characters at high health. Barrier Spheres and other items that boost your magic defense will help dilute this attack.
  7. Run forward. Climb the stairs and keep heading north. Eventually you will see the Son of Sun again. Run up to it. It will turn into the Moon Stone. Take the Moon Stone.
  8. Exit the Sun Palace and enter the Epoch. Warp to 65,000,000 B.C. Land to the island in the northeast corner of the map. Enter the Sun Shrine.
  9. Run forward and place the Moon Stone in the light. Exit and re-enter the Epoch. Warp to 1,000 A.D.
  10. Enter the Sun Shrine in this time period. You will find that the Moon Stone is mysteriously missing. Exit and enter the Epoch.
  11. Fly to Porre in the southwest. You will see a light shining from the Mayor's house. Land and enter the house.
  12. The mayor will deny all knowledge of the Moon Stone. Exit the house. Enter the Epoch and warp to 600 A.D.
  13. Land at Porre again. Enter the Elder's House (the same location as the Mayor's Manor in 1,000 A.D.). Talk to the woman inside. She will say something about wanting jerky. Exit the house. Re-enter the Epoch and warp back to 1,000 A.D.
  14. Land again in Porre. Enter the Snail Shop. Talk to the bartender. Buy the jerky from him for 9,900 gold. Exit the shop.
  15. Enter the Epoch. Warp back to 600 A.D.
  16. Enter the Elder's House and give the woman inside the jerky. Be sure to give it to her for free. She tells you that she will teach her children about sharing. This lesson will go down through the generations, to the mayor in 1,000 A.D. Exit the house and use the Epoch to warp back to 1,000 A.D.
  17. Re-enter the Mayor's Manor. Talk to the mayor. He will give you the Moon Stone. Exit and enter the Epoch.
  18. Fly to the Sun Shrine in this time period and replace the Moon Stone in the light.
  19. Use the Epoch to warp to 2300 A.D. Enter the Sun Shrine. You will see that the Moon Stone is glowing with solar energy. It is now called the Sun Stone.
  20. Place Lucca in your party and have her examine the stone. She will say that she wants to take it back to her house in 1,000 A.D.
  21. The computer will take control and automatically takes you to Lucca's house. Watch as she creates the Wondershot. This is Lucca's ultimate weapon so be sure to equip it to her at the next opportunity. You will also receive Sunglasses, an item that boosts the amount of damage a character inflicts.

Dino Lair/Rainbow Shell

  1. Travel to 600 A.D. Land in Choras village. Enter the tavern. Talk to Toma (the man standing at the left side of the bar). He will give you Toma's Spirits. Exit the tavern.
  2. Board the Epoch and warp to 1,000 A.D. Land in Choras.
  3. Enter the West Cape (it's northwest of the village).
  4. Run forward until you reach Toma's gravestone. You will pour the pop on the gravestone. Toma's ghost will appear. He will tell you that the Rainbow Shell is on an island called the Giant's Claw. Check behind the gravestone for a Speed Capsule. Exit the cape.
  5. Board the Epoch and travel to 600 A.D. Navigate your way to the Giant's Claw (northwest of Choras Village). Land and enter the cave.
  6. TIP: Believe it or not you will fight dinosaurs in this cave. Remember that they are vulnerable to lightning attacks so be sure to include Crono and/or Magus in your party.
  7. Head along the path to the right. Eventually you will find a note. Read the note. It's from Toma. It says that some of the holes you encounter may need to be jumped into. Take this to heart and exit to the south.
  8. You will recognize this throne room from when you last fought Azala in 65,000,000 B.C. Head south and exit the room.
  9. You will emerge into another cave. You can head south, down a flight of stairs, or go left. Head to the left. Try to open the treasure chest you find there. You will be ambushed by a Aecytosaur and two Aecytonyx. Cast Lightning II. This should eliminate the two Aecytonyx in one hit. Concentrate your attacks on the Aecytosaur until you defeat him. Open the chest to receive the Clarity Cap.
  10. Ignore the doorway that the dinosaurs used to enter the area. It leads to a dead end. Instead go back to the right and run down the stairs.
  11. Run to the right and you will be attacked by three Lizardactyl. Do not use Lightning on these guys since they will actually gain life from the attack. Use other magic instead or single them out with physical techs. They will often counter with an attack called Wind Blow that causes Confuse. This being the case, it's a good idea to equip the Clarity Cap you just received to one of your party members before fighting them.
  12. TIP: A good strategy is to equip the Clarity Cap to Ayla and then cast Charm on each Lizardactyl. They each give a Turbo Ether so it's not a bad deal. They will counter each Charm with a Wind Blow, but since Ayla is wearing the cap she will be immune to Confuse.
  13. Once they are defeated, exit the screen via the doorway to the northeast.
  14. You will again be in the room with three switches and a dinosaur skull at its far end. Run forward and hit the switch at the center of the room. This will cause a Save Point to appear on the left. Save the game if you wish.
  15. Now head back to the entrance of the room. Press the switch on the left. This causes the floors to open ahead of you. Drop down the holes in the floor (as indicated by Toma's note).
  16. NOTE: The switch on the right causes two Fossil Apes to drop from above and attack. If you do this when the trapdoors are open, then they will fall through and you will be forced to fight them when you drop down. Otherwise, they will simply fall into the room and you must fight them there. It may be worth fighting them, however, if you have Ayla in your party. Each Fossil Ape will yield a Megaelixir if you Charm them.
  17. You will drop into another room that holds a dinosaur skull and two switches. The switch on the right causes three Aecytonx to enter the room and attack. The switch on the left opens the dinosaur skull. Press the one that opens the skull. Enter the skull and collect the Strength Capsule from the ground. Head south through both rooms and exit.
  18. You will be in another cave area. Go left until you reach a rope ladder. Climb down the ladder.
  19. Walk left and collect the Hi-Ether from the treasure chest. Go right as far as you can and collect the Strength Capsule off the ground. Climb back up the ladder.
  20. From the ladder, follow the path to the left. It will bend south and then back to the right. Eventually you will be ambushed by two Fossil Apes. Deal with them and then continue to the right.
  21. Eventually you will be ambushed by two Aecytonx and a Fossil Ape. Cast Lightning II to defeat the two dinosaurs and then concentrate on the ape. Once they are defeated, collect the Blue Gemstone from the nearby treasure chest. It is partially hidden to the north of where the beasts just attacked you. This gemstone invokes a triple tech called Omega Flare. Once you have it, exit the screen to the south.
  22. Run to to the right. Eventually you will get to an area with two rope bridges. One is to your north and one to your south. Ignore the one that heads north and climb down the ladder to the south.
  23. Run all the way to your left once you climb down the ladder. There is a hidden treasure chest here which contains the Zodiac Cape (it only works on female party members). Continue south. Collect the Lapis from the next treasure chest you see. Climb down another rope ladder and then head to the left. Exit through the doorway to the next area.
  24. Run forward and you will encounter two Aecytonx and an Aecytosaur. Defeat them as you did before. Keep running forward and you will see two dinosaur skulls. One is open, the other is closed. Enter the open one. Walk up the stairs to the next level.
  25. You will recognize this area from before. There will be a single Fossil Ape on either side of the hallway. Use the button on each end to drop them through a trap door (assuming you don't want to fight them).
  26. First head through the doorway on the left side of the hall. This leads you to a room containing a treasure chest. Open the chest to obtain the Wrath Band. This grants an 80% counter attack rate to the wearer. Head back to the previous room.
  27. You will most likely be forced to fight the Fossial Ape and two Lizardactyls when you re-enter this room. If so, defeat them and then walk through the doorway on the right side of the room.
  28. When you enter this room you will see a Rubble to your immediate right. Equip party members that still need to earn tech points (remember the Rubbles gives 100 apiece). Attack the Rubble and and then its twin to the south. As before it will lock out your techs and items, forcing you to use normal attacks. Exit the room via the doorway on the right.
  29. Open the egg-shaped treasure chest on the right. A trap door will open below your party, causing them to fall to a lower level.
  30. You are now in the prison that once held the cavemen (the ones you freed during 65,000,000 B.C.). Exit the cell.
  31. First go to your left and walk up the stairs. At the top of the stairs you will find a Strength Capsule.
  32. Retrace your steps to the entrance of the jail cell. Now head to the right. Follow the path and walk down the stairs at its end.
  33. Head south and save your game at the Save Point. Walk to the left and open the jail cell with the button on the wall. Enter the cell and walk through the open doorway inside.
  34. You will now be in a narrow cave. Hear that roaring? Run forward and you will see Rust Tyranno sitting there, roaring. Try to go around him and he will attack.
  35. The Rust Tyrano will use the same tricks as his cousin. Luckily he is easier because your party will be stronger.
    1. As before, you will be given a countdown from 5. Once the countdown reaches zero, the Rust Tyrano will unleash a flame attack that hits all party members. This will deal around 200 HP to each party member the first time he does it. The trick here, however, is that the longer he is alive the stronger the flame will become with each attack. Defeat him quickly!
    2. He will also use a chew attack that will deal about 400 HP to a single party member and in turn gain him the same amount of life.
    3. There isn't much of a strategy here. Keep your party members healed up and unleash powerful attacks on him. Magus's Dark Bomb seems to work well, as do double techs like Falcon Strike (Crono and Ayla). Just keep hitting him and eventually he will fall.
  36. Run forward, past where the Rust Tyrano was sitting, and you will find the Rainbow Shell. Unfortunately it is too heavy for your party to lift.
  37. Run back the way you came. The game will automatically take you to Guardia Castle circa 600 A.D. The king and queen will agree to take possession of the Rainbow Shell for you.
  38. Exit the castle and enter the Epoch. Warp to 1,000 A.D. Land and enter Guardia Castle during this era.
  39. Run forward, toward the throne room. Two guards will be blocking your way. They inform you that the castle is sealed until the end of the trial.
  40. Walk back to the entrance of the castle. Head to the right. When you reach the end of the hall you will see two stairways. Enter the one on the left.
  41. Walk up the stairs until you reach the top. Head down the hall. You will see two guards blocking a doorway. Place Marle in your party. Talk to the guards. She will order them out of the way.
  42. You will see a cut scene that shows King Guardia on trial for selling the Rainbow Shell. The Chancellor challenges you to bring the shell before the court to confirm the king's innocence. Eventually you will be returned to the hallway.
  43. Head back down the stairs to the area with the two stairwells. Now head down the stairs on the right.
  44. You will see an unconscious guard nearby. Two enemies will be standing guard in an adjacent hallway. Run to the right and engage the two Vipers.
  45. After the cut scene, you will fight a Viper and a Naga. Defeat them and open the treasure chests to your left to collect a Lapis, Turbo Ether, and other items. Head north into the next hallway.
  46. A Naga will be patrolling the hall. Avoid her if you wish. If she touches you then you will be forced to fight. Head north and exit to the next screen.
  47. Run forward. At two points a Viper will dash out and try to ambush your party. If it hits you then you must fight both the Viper and two Nagas. It seems the best way to avoid this is to simply run through the hall. You will move faster than it can strike. Eventually you will get to the end of the hall. Walk up the stairs and through the door at the top.
  48. You will see the Rainbow Shell ahead of you. Open the various treasure chests around the room to collect the items within them. Walk up to the Rainbow Shell. Marle will obtain a Rainbow Shard.
  49. After a cut scene with the king the game will give you control. Retrace your steps back to the court room. Try to avoid the enemies that stalk the halls.
  50. Eventually you will be outside the door to the court room. Talk to the guards that block your way. They will not allow you to re-enter. Marle will say she knows another way.
  51. Your party will burst into the court room just as the jury finds the king guilty. Marle will reveal the shard to the court, proving the king's innocence. The Chancellor will then reveal himself to be Yakra XIII. Get ready to fight!
  52. Yakra XIII isn't anything special, but nevertheless here are some of the tricks he has up his sleeves (tentacles?):
    1. At the beginning of the fight he will often use a spell called Miasma against a single party member. This deals about 40 HP in damage to that member and infects them with Confuse.
    2. He will jump up and down which causes the ground to shake. This deals, at the most, about 100 HP to each party member.
    3. There are not special considerations to attacking Yakra XIII. Just use your most effective techs to deal him as much damage as possible. As with many bosses, Crono's double techs seem particularly effective.
    4. Eventually Yakra will say, "I heard about you from my ancestors, your weakness is this..." He will then begin firing needles. He can do this to a single party member, which deals about 350 HP in damage, or to all party members, which deals about 300 HP to each character.
    5. All you have to do at this point is keep everyone's health up. He may knock out one party member if he concentrates his needles on him or her. If this happens, simply revive him or her and boost up their health.
    6. Ideally you want all three party members above 400 HP before Yakra XIII succumbs to his wounds. This is because he will attack you with needles one last time before he dies.
  53. Watch the cut scene that follows between Marle and King Guardia. Eventually Melchior will appear and offer to make weapons out of the Rainbow Shell.
  54. NOTE: Walk back to the court room. There will be a key on the floor. Pick it up. Walk back downstairs, toward the entrance of the castle. The second room you pass will hold a locked chest. Open it with the key to find the kidnapped Chancellor!
  55. Head to where you found the Rainbow Shell. Talk to Melchior. He will give you a choice. He can make 1 Prismatic Dress or 3 Prismatic Helms. The dress cuts 1/3 of all magic attacks but can only be equipped to one of the female party members. The helms add +9 magic defense and prevent all status ailments. Choose wisely.
  56. IMPORTANT: Talk to Melchior again after he has made the Prismatic Helms/Dress. If you have completed the Sun Stone quest (see above) he will make Prism Spectacles (greatly boosts the damage the wearer inflicts) and the Rainbow (Crono's ultimate weapon).

Ozzie's Revenge - 600 A.D.

YouTube: Ozzie's fortress (Time: 9:50)
  1. Jump into the Epoch and warp to 600 A.D. Fly to the rightmost center island (the one with the tower surrounded by forest). Land and enter Ozzie's Fort.
  2. You will encounter Ozzie. After a brief exchange he will flee. Run up the stairs after him.
  3. You will emerge into a larger room. Run forward. You will encounter Ozzie again. He will summon Flea and escape.
  4. Flea shouldn't be nearly as much trouble this time around. Use your most powerful attacks to quickly defeat her. She will eventually flee up the stairs to the next room. Follow her.
  5. You will enter a room with two conveyor belts on either side of the walkway. Run forward. Ozzie will summon two monsters to attack. These beasts, however, will fall to their doom before you can fight them. Ozzie will teleport away. Run up the stairs to the next room.
  6. Run forward and you will encounter Ozzie again. This time he summons Slash.
  7. As with Flea, Slash will be somewhat of a pushover. Unleash some powerful tech attacks and you may be able to defeat him before he even lands a hit. Slash will flee up the stairs ahead once you defeat him. Follow him to the next room.
  8. In this next room you will see Ozzie turning a crank that moves a pendulum. The pendulum hovers above a treasure chest. Ignore the chest and follow the pathway around to the right. Try to exit the room. Ozzie will taunt you and then disappear. You can now safely open the chest behind the pendulum. It contains a Hi-Ether. Exit to the next room.
  9. TIP: There is a secret door opposite the exit (the exit near where Ozzie is standing). Walk south, into the black wall until you emerge into a secret room. You will see three treasure chests. Each contain Magus' ultimate weapons and armor. They are as follows: Gloom Cape, Gloom Helm, Doom Scythe. Additionally there is a Magic Capsule to the right of the chests.
  10. TIP: Include Ayla in your party before you enter the next room.
  11. You will now face Ozzie, Flea and Slash all at once. Here are some of their tricks:
    1. Slash - He will do a frenzy attack with his sword that deals about 130 HP in damage to a single party member.
    2. Flea - she can cast a fiery kiss on a single party member, which deals minimal damage. She can also cast Blind on your party members.
    3. Flea and Slash can perform a double tech on one of your party members. This deals about 100 HP in damage.
    4. The trio will frequently use two triple techs against you. The first, Delta Force, deals about 100 HP to all party members. The second, Evil Impulse, does about 140 HP to a single party member. They often use these as counterattacks.
    5. None of the trio's attacks are especially dangerous. They do, however, have a high stamina and their triple techs can quickly wear you down if you aren't careful. Keep your health up and concentrate your attacks on Slash and Flea. Ozzie is helpless without them. Ayla and Crono's double tech, Falcon Strike, can hit both of them at once. Additionally many of Magus's spells seem to work well.
    6. TIP: Use Ayla to Charm each member of the trio. You will receive Ozzie Pants from Ozzie, the Slasher II sword from Slash, and Flea Bustier from Flea.
  12. Take the Speed Ring and Clarity Cap from the treasure chests and then proceed to the next room.
  13. Ozzie will again freeze himself. Any attack on him will result in a fire bomb that hits all party members but deals minimal damage. Attack the three red switches behind Ozzie. You will hit the wrong one the first time, which opens a trap door under your party, causing them to fall through.
  14. You will wind up back in the previous room (where you fought Ozzie, Slash, and Flea together). Retrace your steps back to Ozzie. Watch as he gets done in by a kitten. Seriously.
  15. Retrace your steps back to the entrance of Ozzie's Fort. Exit to the overworld.
  16. NOTE: Now that you've defeated Ozzie in 600 A.D., the monsters that inhabit Medina Village in 1,000 A.D. will be much nicer to you. The monster that runs the market will now sell to you (although most of his items will be way underpowered compared to your current arsenal).
