Mystic Mountains
- YouTube: Meet Ayla! 65,000,000 BC! (Time: 10:50)
- Your party will immediately be attacked by five dinosaur humanoid creatures called Reptites. Use magic and dual tech abilities like Fire Whirl to quickly clear them out.
- After defeating these five baddies, about seven more will appear. Soon, however, Ayla enters and takes care of three, leaving you to face only four. Dispatch them the same way you did their late brethren.
- Ayla will reappear and introduce herself. She will tell you to follow her to Ioka Village. Oblige her.
- TIP: Dinosaurs are especially vulnerable to Lightning damage. Keep this in mind for it will be useful later in the game.
- TIP: Although it is easy to avoid encounters with enemies during this time period, it is recommended that you fight as many foes as possible. The reasons for this are two fold: experience and the items that you receive from the fights. There are four items one can collect: a fang, horn, feather, or petal. These items can be traded for weapons in Ioka Village.
- Once you get to the next screen Ayla will leap onto a ledge, leaving you to fend for yourself (thanks a lot). Proceed south. There will be a group of four dinosaurs called Crested Sprinters patrolling the path. You can avoid them if you run to the right. If, however, you choose to fight then use mass attacks like Fire Whirl and/or Napalm to quickly clear them out.
- Keep heading south. You will encounter two furry creatures called Kiwalas. Unlike the dinosaurs these creatures are more vulnerable to regular attacks. Don't waste your magic running them through.
- Keep walking south. You will see two dinosaurs (Crested Sprinters) drinking from the stream. If you wish you can walk to the left to avoid them.
- Walk further downstream and you will see four Kiwalas dancing around a stone. Fight them or run to the right to avoid a confrontation.
- Ayla will reappear and tell you to follow her. Do so and you will enter a prehistoric overworld screen.
-
Ioka Village
- Head east and then north. You will see various Ioka huts. You must enter each individually.
- TIP: Of the first two huts you see, enter the one to the right. Talk to the woman standing in the left side of the room. Say yes when she asks you if you want to drink the happy water. This water will restore your HP/MP.
- Head north, across the bridge. You will see two huts and the Meeting Grounds.
- Enter the Chief's Hut (the one on the left).
- You will see Ayla standing at the center of the room. Talk to her. She will invite you to a party. At this point the computer takes control and cuts to the party.
- When you regain control, you will only be able to move Crono (the other party members are doing their own thing).
- Talk to the other party members. Wander around a bit to take in the festivities. Now talk to Ayla (you may need to talk to her more than once). Crono will ask her about the red rock she possesses. She says that Crono must beat her in a contest to win the rock. Accept the challenge.
- Ayla's challenge is a drinking contest. Basically all you need to do is tap A as fast as possible to win.
- TIP: It is easier to win if you tap A while the DS rests on a flat surface.
-
Footsteps! Follow! - 65,000,000 B.C.
- YouTube: Foosteps to Reptite Lair (Time: 10:59)
- Your party members awaken the next morning (complete with hangovers) to find that the Gate Key to the time portals has been stolen. The computer will automatically take you to Ayla's hut.
- Wake up Ayla. She agrees to help you find the key.
- TIP: At this point you must choose which third party member to take - Marle, Robo, or Lucca. It is recommended you take Marle or Robo for their healing abilities.
- Exit Ayla's hut. Enter the hut to the right of Ayla's.
- Talk to the old man at the center of the hut. He tells you that he will trade you "strong thing" for 3 fangs, petals, horns, or feathers. You must offer up three of two types of items (for a total of six) for the trade to occur. For example, three fangs and three feathers get you a Ruby Vest.
- TIP: One of the cavemen on the left side of the hut sells Potions and Panaceas.
- Exit the hut. Head south once you get back to the overworld. Enter the Forest Maze to the south of the Ioka Village.
-
-
Forest Maze
- You will encounter a character named Kino. Talk to her. She will admit to taking Crono's items. She says, however, that the Reptites took the loot from her.
- Head to the right. Open the treasure chest you find. Climb down the green vine to the lower level.
- You will be attacked by two Golden Eaglets. Use magic to eliminate them. Take the Athenian Water from the treasure chest. Climb down the green vine to your right to the next level.
- Follow the dinosaur tracks to your right. Cross the fallen tree. Keep following the tracks north and then to the right.
- Proceed south through the clearing. A winged monkey creature called a Bao Bao will attack your party. It's more bark than bite. Use normal attacks to defeat it.
- Keep heading south. Be sure to collect the Athenian Water from the treasure chest along the way (to the left of the path).
- Keep following the footprints. You will pass under a land bridge. Keep heading south until you see a treasure chest. Open the chest to find a shelter. Head right from the treasure chest and up the ramp to a higher elevation.
- Follow this path as it goes north and then veers to the left. You will reach another dirt clearing with footprints. Try to go south. You will be attacked by two Crested Sprinters. Defeat them with magic and special attacks.
- Head south, along the narrow elevated path. It will veer to the left and you will be reach a fork in the road. Head down the left (more southerly) path. Follow the path. Eventually you will fight a Bao Bao and a Kilwalla. Defeat them as you did before. Climb down the vine to the south of where they attacked you. Head south to the next screen.
- You will now be in the overworld screen again. Head south and enter the Reptite Lair.
-
Reptite Lair
- You will emerge into a cave. Head through the passage to your right.
- Walk down the stairs. You will see at least four beetles patrolling the area. These are Aecyto Weevils. Defeat them. Use special attacks and magic to quickly dispatch them. Head to the north side of the room and jump down the hole you find there.
- This brings your party to a new room. More weevils patrol the area. There will be another hole to your immediate left. Try to jump down the hole. The hole will disappear and you will be forced to fight the weevils. Use the same tactics as before to defeat them. Jump down the hole once it reappears.
- You will emerge into a room with a large green dinosaur standing between your party and another hole. This is a Megasaur. Fight the dinosaur. Use Crono's Lightening on him first to lower his defense and then wail on him with normal attacks. He will go down quickly. Jump into the hole.
- You will now be in a large room. Reptites run back and forth. Try not to get caught, otherwise you will have to fight them (assuming you want to avoid the fight).
- Run south from the doorway. You will see a Reptite standing in front of a treasure chest. Open the chest to find the Stone Helm. Equip it to a party member.
- Now head east through the room. You will see a passage in the northeast side of the room. Nearby is another Reptite guarding a treasure chest. Run up to the chest. The Reptite will alert a Megasaur which will approach from the right. Use Crono's Lightning on the Megasaur. Take him out first, and then concentrate on the Reptite. Open the chest to find a Hi-Ether. Exit to the right.
- As soon as you enter this next area, a Bao Bao and a mushroom creature called a Mossback will attack from the south. Eliminate the Mossback first. If you don't the Bao Bao will constantly perform a counterattack by throwing the Mossback at each party member that damages the winged ape.
- Head north. You will encounter another Bao Bao and two Mossbacks. As before, eliminate the Mossbacks first. Head north once you defeat them all.
- There will be a Megasaur and two Reptite blocking your entrance to a staircase. Defeat the Megasaur first before concentrating on the Reptites. Once you have sent all three to the reaper, a Save Point will appear to your right. Save the game.
- TIP: You may want to use a shelter at the Save Point.
- Proceed up the stairs to the north.
- You will be a new room. Walk up the stairs ahead. You will watch a brief cut scene with Ayla's dinosaur nemesis, Azala. The game will ask whether or not Crono should tell Azala about the Gate Key. It doesn't matter which way you answer. Either way he will send Nizbel to attack your party.
-
Boss - Nizbel
- YouTube: Boss Battle! Nizbel! (Time: 10:49)
- Nizbel looks like a triceratops on steroids. As with all dinosaurs, electricity (Lightning) lowers his defense.
- There is a well-defined pattern to this boss. First, use Crono to cast a Lightning attack on Nizbel. This lowers his defense. Without doing this first, your attacks will have little effect on the monstrosity.
- Wail on him once his defense is down. Use Crono's Cleave attack and Ayla's Roudillo Kick. The dual tech between Crono and Ayla, called Drill Kick, is particularly devastating.
- Nizbel will eventually recover. At this point he will discharge all the electricity. This is a mass attack that deals 140-170 HP to each party member. Fear not, for if you are at full health you will survive this first onslaught.
- After he discharges, quickly attack him with Crono's Lightning to again down his defense. Keep Crono and Ayla on the offensive while the third party member (preferably Marle) casts Cure and/or uses Potions to replenish everyone's HP. This is in preparation for Nizbel's next electric discharge (which will probably kill your party if you don't get their HP up).
- TIP: Always heal Crono first. His Lightning attack is crucial to defeating this boss. Likewise, make sure he does not run out of MP.
- Repeat these steps and you will eventually fell this beast.
- Azala gives back the Gate Key once Nizbel is defeated.
-
Have Dreamstone, Will Travel
- You regain control of your characters in Ayla's hut. Ayla says goodbye (she isn't a permanent part of your team... yet). Exit her hut.
- Go to the hut to the right of Ayla's. Talk to the old man inside. Trade with him. Three petals and three fangs gets you the Ruby Gun (for Lucca). Three petals and three horns gets you the Shaman's Bow (for Marle). Three fangs and three feathers gets you the Ruby Vest. Three horns and three feathers, the Stone Helm. Three petals and three feathers, the Stone Arm (for Robo). Three horns and three fangs, the Mammoth Tusk (for Crono). Trade as needed, although it is recommended you pick up the Ruby Vests and Stone Helms as they can be equipped to all party members.
- TIP: If you need more horns, petals, fangs, or feathers then go to the Hunting Grounds. This area is located in the patch of forest to the northeast of the Meeting Grounds. You will have to enter and go through the Meeting Grounds to get there.
- TIP: Each of the creatures in the Hunting Grounds (mostly frogs and slime) will give you a more than usual amount of feathers, horns, etc. However, there is a secret creature that only comes out when it rains. When it begins raining climb up to the land bridge that hangs over the area. Head all the way to the right and you will see a blue creature called a Nu. Fight him. He can deal quite a bit of damage (bringing you down to one HP in one hit!) but won't kill you. After you've defeated him, he will give you 3 of each of the 4 items, plus an accessory called Third Eye. The Third Eye doubles the wearer's evasion.
- When you are finished trading, exit Ioka Village. Head west, back to the Mystic Mountains.
- Enter the Mystic Mountains. Retrace your steps north. You will have to fight some enemies along the way, but they are nothing you haven't encountered before.
- Once you get to the clearing, head to the left and then north.
- In the next screen you will see the time portal hanging in mid-air. You need to run to the ledge immediately above the portal and jump off. The party will enter the portal and warp to The End of Time.
-
The Masamune - 600 A.D.
- YouTube: Round two with Spekkio! Masamune Fixed! (Time: 10:31)
- You will arrive at the End of Time. Save your game and restore your HP/MP via the crystal near the save station. Warp to Medina Village, 1,000 A.D.
- Exit the house to the overworld. Go west and enter Melchior's Cabin.
- Talk to Melchior. He will agree to reforge the Masamune using the dreamstone.
- Melchior will walk downstairs to his workshop and begin reforging the sword. One of your party members will accompany him. Follow them downstairs.
- Wait patiently as they reforge the sword. There will be quite a few dialogue boxes to scroll through. Eventually they will finish.
- The entire party will appear back upstairs. Melchior will give you the Masamune. Exit the cabin.
- Head back to the house in the village with the time portal inside of it. Open the cabinet to enter the portal.
- You will be back at The End of Time. Warp to Truce Canyon, 600 A.D.
- Navigate your way out of Truce Canyon to the overworld (you should be quite familiar with this process by now).
- Head to the southern continent. Enter the Cursed Woods.
- Head north through the Cursed Woods. Enter Frog's House via the bush at the dead end.
- Talk to Frog. You will give him the Masamune.
- Frog says he needs to ponder these new turn of events. Watch the cut scene that details Frog's origins.
- The game fast forwards to next morning. Frog will agree to accompany you to defeat Magus. The game forces you to include Crono and Frog in your party. The third party member is up to you. All have their advantages, but one could argue that Lucca is best in this third slot since including her means you aren't doubling up on magical abilities (both Frog and Marle use water magic). Remember, however, you can always switch the party around at the drop of a hat.
- Exit Frog's house. Make your way back through the Cursed Woods to the overworld.
- TIP: Now that you have Frog in your party, return to The End of Time via Truce Canyon. Visit Spekkio and he will give Frog water-based magic.
- TIP: You may want to pay a visit to prehistoric times again via the light bucket at the End of Time. There you can get Frog a Ruby Vest and Stone Helm (provided you don't have extra ones already).
- TIP: Stock up on Potions before going to Magus's lair.
- Walk to the Magic Cave on the southern continent in 600 A.D. It is east of the Denadoro Mountains (where you found the Masamune). Enter the area.
- Frog will walk up to the cliffs. Watch the cut scene. Frog will cut open the rock, creating an opening for the party to walk through.
- Enter the cave.
-
Magic Cave
- YouTube: Frog's painful past! Magic Cave! (Time: 10:58)
- Defeat the Vampire Bats and two rat-like Grimlings immediately to you right. The Grimlings are only vulnerable to magic damage. Take them out first since they have a quick recovery time between attacks and are extremely annoying.
- Head to the right, then run north once you see the black treasure chest (you can't open it yet).
- Follow the path and you will encounter two more Vampire Bats and another Grimling. Quickly cast a spell to take out the Grimling before focusing your standard attacks on the bats.
- After you defeat the aforementioned enemies, a huge group of Gremlings will appear and run to the right. Follow the path they took. Eventually you will see a staircase ahead. Four Gremlings are patrolling in front of it. You can avoid them if you run past them at the right time. Otherwise, attack and defeat them. Frog and Marle's dual tech, Ice Water, works really well against these guys.
- After you defeat the Gremlings, two more will appear accompanied by two Vampire Bats. Use the same techniques as before to bring them down.
- Walk up the stairs to the north. At the top you will see the body of a soldier. Examine the body. It holds a note that warns you about Magus' Jugglers. Apparently they tighten their defense against physical attacks if you strike them, and likewise against magical attacks if you cast one upon them. Remember this. Exit the cave.
- You will be back in the overworld. Head north and enter Fiendlord's Keep.
