The Black Omen

  1. IMPORTANT: You can engage Lavos a number of ways. The most simple are to use the bucket at The End of Time or travel to 1999 A.D. with the Epoch. Perhaps the most rewarding, however, is to fight through the Black Omen. This ghastly ship appears in the sky of every time period except 65,000,000 B.C. Enter it with the Epoch in any time period except 2300 A.D. The remainder of the walkthrough assumes you plan to reach Lavos via the Black Omen.

  2. NOTE: The same strategies used against Lavos at the end of the Black Omen can be used against him if you decide to skip the stage and head to Lavos directly.

  3. You should now be on a pier that extends from the Black Omen. Run forward. Defeat the six Laser Guards you encounter. Enter the Black Omen.

  4. In the next room you will encounter Queen Zeal. She will taunt you and summon the Mega Mutant. Get ready to fight!

Boss - Mega Mutant

  1. This guy is not particularly difficult. He will mostly cast status spells like Chaos Zone (which causes Confuse) and Mutant Gas (causes Sleep). If you have equipped the Prism Helms (provided you received them), then your party members will be immune to these effects.

  2. Aside from the above, there is nothing particularly noteworthy about the Mega Mutant. Use double techs, triple techs, and magic against him. Try to hit both is top and bottom portions for they are separate. If you eliminate one, the second will continue fighting.

The Black Omen (cont'd.)

  1. Run north after defeating the mutant. You will encounter two Shieldsmen. Wait until they stick their heads out from behind their shields before you attack. If you hit the shield itself they will often counter by casting Lock.

  2. Continue to the north. Turn right and enter the doorway off to the side.

  3. Run forward and engage the two Martellos. After defeating them head north.

  4. The next two creatures you encounter will be called Fangbeasts. They can use a technique called Devil's Drop which halves the HP of a single party member. Note that magic is ineffective against them. These are some of the tougher regular enemies so do not be afraid to use a Megaelixir or other powerful item if your party's health starts to run low.

  5. TIP: Use Charm on the Fangbeasts if you have Ayla in your party. This will yield a Nova Armor from each!

  6. Continue north. You will encounter a Martello and two Synchrites. Concentrate on the Synchrites first and defeat them before they finish their countdown.

  7. Afterward, follow the smaller path that bends to the right and then south. Use the Save Point at the end of the path.

  8. Head north and exit to the next area.

  9. Run forward and fight the two Panels that you encounter. Use normal attacks to defeat them. #Continue forward and fight two more Panels at the end of the hall. Exit to the next area.

  10. You will see three blob-like creatures ahead of you. Run forward and engage them. The larger one is called a Watcher. The two smaller ones are Nomads. The Watcher will cast Omnilock and disable your techs and items. Use normal attacks to best them. Try to defeat them before they all escape for they give a lot of experience and tech points.

  11. Continue north. You will eventually encounter another group of enemies consisting of one Watcher and two Nomads. Defeat them and head north.

  12. Defeat the third Watcher/Nomad group you encounter. Follow the platform as it extends to the left. Exit to the next screen.

  13. You will see a mutant patrolling the platform you are on. You can try to avoid him or just engage him. If you decide to fight then you must face two of these Metal Mutants. Watch out for their life sucking ability because they can take more than 200 HP from a single party member. Continue to the north after defeating them.

  14. Eventually you will be forced to run between two Metal Mutants. They will attack along with two Flyclops. Cast spells that hit all of them at once and heal when necessary. Try to take out the Metal Mutants first. Head north and exit to the next screen.

  15. Step into the teleporter. You will reappear in a nearly identical room. Exit to the south.

  16. You will now be on a lift. Activate the lift with the glowing control panel to the left. The lift will descend for a few moments. Exit when it stops.

  17. Walk forward and you will be forced to fight another Watcher/Nomad group. Head to the right. Follow the path to the north and defeat the next Watcher/Nomad group.

  18. Keep following the path as it curves around. Run past the stairs you see to find a treasure chest. Open the chest to collect a Megaelixir. Proceed up the stairs.

  19. Defeat the Synchrite and two Flyclops at the top of the stairs. Search the area to their left to find a treasure chest containing 30,000 gold. Walk through the door to the north.

  20. A column blocks your path, forcing you to go either left or right. If you head to the left you will be attacked by two Hydrocondas. To the right will be two Flyclops in wait. Neither group of enemies are too tough. No matter which way you go, head up the stairs to the north after dealing with the group of fiends.

  21. Another Watcher/Nomad group will be at the top of the stairs. Head to the right after defeating them. Follow the path around and open the chest you find to collect the Magic Crest. Continue north. You may be attacked by a Synchrite and Martello. Exit via the passageway to the north.

  22. You will enter a hallway. There are treasure chests to your immediate right and left. The one on the right contains a Vigilant's Hat. The one on the left contains an Elixir. Continue north, through the hallway. You will see a Save Point ahead.

  23. Open the two nearby treasure chests to find Nova Armor and a Megaelixir. Save the game. Continue north.

  24. You will see two Nus. The one on the left will sell you Potions. The one on the right allows you to leave the Black Omen if you so wish. Open the treasure chests near the Nus to get a Megaelixir and a Haste Helm.

  25. Run to the wall between the two Nus and press A. Enter the doorway that opens.

  26. Follow the path to the left. You will encounter a creature called Blubber Hulk. Use techs to defeat him. Exit via the doorway to the right of where the creature appeared.

  27. Run forward and engage the two Cybots. They will try to cast Confuse on you, but this will be ineffective if you are wearing the Prism Helms. They can also halve your characters' HPs with an Iron Sphere. They are not that tough, however, and will easily fall after a few hits. Continue north.

  28. Engage and defeat the three Shieldsmen that you encounter. Continue north.

  29. You will walk up two flights of stairs. Eventually you will see a line of Hydrocondas moving toward the right. Try to open the treasure chest on the upper left. Fight and defeat the Hydrocondas you alert. Open the chest to collect a Zodiac Cape. Exit via the passage on the right.

  30. Run to the right and fight another Watcher/Nomad combo. Continue up the stairs to the right. Defeat the Flyclops and two Fangbeasts that attack at the top of the stairs. Open the nearby treasure chest to find a Megaelixir. Continue to the right.

  31. The last platform in this room contains two Watchers and four Nomads. Fight them if you wish. Exit via the doorway to the south.

  32. Head south. Run to the left of the central statue and open the treasure chest you find. Inside is the Power Crest. Continue south, past the statues. Run up either set of stairs and continue south. Defeat the Blubbler Hulk and two Flyclops that attack.

  33. Continue to the next platform. Defeat the Cybot and Martello that appear. Open the chest in the lower right hand corner to find a Speed Capsule. Exit the screen via the doorway in the lower left hand corner.

  34. Head all the way to the left, past the a doorway, until you get to a treasure chest. Open it to find a Speed Capsule. Backtrack and exit through the doorway to the north.

  35. Run forward and you will be transported to another area of the Black Omen. Exit to the north.

  36. Head north and turn left at the first opportunity. Head to the left. You will be attacked by two Narbles and two Ghaj (arguably the ugliest enemies in the game). Use a technique that hits all of them at once (Falcon Strike works great). Continue to the left until you reach a narrow walkway.

  37. Head south along this narrow walkway until you reach a treasure chest. Open it to collect an Elixir. Now head north and take your second right.

  38. Run to the right and up the stairs. Touch any of the four Nomads to summon a Watcher. Run down the stairs to the right when you are finished with the battle.

  39. Follow the path north and then to the left. Open the nearby treasure chest to collect a Speed Capsule. Run around to the other side of the statue to open the second chest and find a Megaelixir. Head left, onto a narrow pathway and then north. Exit the screen via the doorway.

  40. Save your game with the Save Point. Use a Shelter if needed. Head north, through the doorway.

  41. Run to the center of the area and get ready to fight the Giga Mutant!

Boss - Giga Mutant

  1. This guy is a bit of a pushover. Like the earlier mutant, it is made up of two halves. Unlike the earlier one, however, the Giga Mutant is only vulnerable to magical attacks.

  2. Cast powerful magic attacks like Luminaire and Dark Matter against it. After a short amount of time you will take it down.

  3. The only thing to really worry about is the mutant's Life Shaver attack. This will bring a single party member's HP down to 1. If this occurs then quickly use an Elixir or healing spell to boost that party member's HP to safe levels.

The Black Omen (cont'd.)

  1. Head north to the next room. Enter the teleporter. Exit the next room.

  2. Activate the lift with the glowing control panel to your right. Exit when it stops.

  3. Walk forward and fight the two Synchrites that attack. Head to the left.

  4. Follow the path. You will encounter two Fangbeasts. Remember these guys take health from magical attacks. Defeat them and continue along the path to the right.

  5. Run up the stairs. Defeat the two Blubber Hulks you encounter. Now head left. Continue following the path and exit through the door to the north.

  6. Run forward and defeat the four Panels. A Save Point will appear to the left. Open the nearby treasure chest to obtain a Speed Capsule. Save the game.

  7. Head up the path to your right.

Boss - Terra Mutant

  1. As with the previous super mutants, the Terra Mutant is made up of a top and bottom half. Do Not use attacks that only target the bottom half. If you do the Terra Mutant will respond with a Life Shaver which whittles the attacker's HP to 1.

  2. Its other attacks are fairly standard. As with all the mutants thus far it will try to cast status effects on your party. Luckily these will be ineffective since you most likely have Prism Helms (use Panaceas if you do not). It can also shoot fireballs at a single party member (deals about 100 HP in damage) and cast a fire spell on everyone (roughly 80 HP in damage to each party member).

  3. The top half is resistant to physical attacks, so use magic instead. The best strategy here is to use powerful magic attacks that damage both sections of the Terra Mutant's body. Attacks like Luminaire, Flare, and Dark Matter work well.

  4. The bottom half of its body will gain HP from the magical attacks, but not enough to make up for how much the top half will be losing.

  5. When you are finished, open the two treasure chests to collect the White Gemstone and Megaelixir. For more on the White Gemstone, consult the Guide to Gemstones.

  6. Exit via the doorway to the north.

The Black Omen (cont'd.)

  1. Run along the catwalk until you reach another doorway. Enter the door.

  2. Run into the room. A Lavos Spawn will beam in and attack. Use the same strategy you used when you encountered these foes on Death Peak (i.e., only attack its head). The only thing you really need to watch out for is the Needle Barrage which will deal around 200 HP in damage.

  3. Exit via the doorway to the north.

  4. Run forward and you will be ambushed by five Panels. Defeat them and a Save Point will appear on your left. Save the game and then exit the room to the north.

  5. Run forward through the hall. You will see replicas of your party members off to either side.

  6. Queen Zeal will appear when you reach the end of the path. Watch the cut scene. Afterward Queen Zeal will attack.

Boss - Queen Zeal

  1. Almost immediately Queen Zeal will cast Halation which brings each party member down to 1 HP. To counter this use a Megaelixir.

  2. Aside from this, Zeal will use fireballs against a single party member (about 100 HP in damage) and can suck away MP.

  3. There is no specific strategy here. Attack her with your most powerful techs until she flees and summons the Mammon Machine.

Boss - Mammon Machine

  1. Your party members should be so strong at this point that the Mammon Machine shouldn't be much of a threat. Like Zeal before it, there are no specific strategies. Use all your most powerful techs against it.

  2. The machine's two main attacks are releasing stored energy, which deals about 70 HP at most to each party member, and Point Flare which deals about 100 HP in damage to a single member. Remember these HP totals assume you have the most advanced armor/helms available. Its attacks could conceivably deal more damage.

Boss - Zeal

  1. Queen Zeal will now reappear and morph into a huge monstrosity made of three parts - her face and two hands.

  2. There is a strategy you need to follow to be successful in this fight. In short, don't attack the hands! Likewise do not use any techs that hit all her body parts at once. The right hand will counter with an MP buster while the left hand will counter with Life Shaver.

  3. There are a number of attacks she will use. Perhaps the most deadly is Starburst, which deals about 200 HP to all characters. Beware because she can also cast Halation which brings all your party members down to 1 HP. Quickly use a Megaelixir if this occurs.

  4. The basic strategy is to keep attacking her face. Use devastating dual and triple techs against it (but remember to watch those hands). Eventually she will be zapped into nothingness.

  5. Lavos emerges once you defeat Zeal. Get ready to fight!

Boss - Lavos

First Phase

  1. You are now face to face to face with Lavos. This first phase of attack will consist of Lavos mimicking bosses you fought earlier in the game. He will follow this order: Dragon Tank, Guardian, Heckran, Zombor, Masamune (second form), Nizbel, Magus, Black Tyano/Azala, and Giga Gaia.

  2. Each of these possess the same strengths and weaknesses as the real versions. Luckily they also possess the same amount of hit points, which should make defeating them extremely easy. Nevertheless, consult the earlier portions of this walkthrough that detail these battles if you need any tips.

  3. NOTE: You will have to re-engage Lavos each time you defeat one of these replicated boss battles. Fortunately this gives you time to heal your party members. Walk forward to Lavos's head when you are ready to continue the fight.

  4. Lavos will scream after you defeat its Giga Gaia replica. Get ready to fight the real thing. Heal your party and walk forward when you are ready to face him.

  5. He will use the same attacks that defeated your party in Ocean Palace. His most prominent, the fiery Rain from the Heavens will deal about 120-170 HP in damage to each party member. The other thing to watch out for is his Needle Attack which will deal about 200 HP in damage to a single party member.

  6. Use powerful techs against him while keeping your party's HP up. This is a pretty straightforward, common sense battle. When you've defeated Lavos your party will enter its shell.

Second Phase

  1. Your party will land near a Save Point and time portal. Be sure to save your game. You can use the time portal if needed. It will take you to The End of Time. You will probably want to stock up on Megaelixirs. Remember you can always make it back here by using the bucket at The End of Time. Don't worry, you won't have to fight Lavos's outer shell again.

  2. TIP: The three party members you choose for the next fight will be the ones that you must use for the rest of the game. To say you must choose wisely would be a gross understatement. Generally speaking, if this is your first trip through the game, then it is advantageous to include Crono in your party. His strong combination of physical and magical attacks make him a no-brainer. The second slot should probably be given to a character like Frog or Robo since they have the ability to heal all three party members at once. Robo may actually be preferable because his physical attacks tend to be stronger than Frog's. For the third slot I would go with either Ayla, Magus, or Lucca. Magus is especially good since he possesses powerful spells like Dark Matter.

  3. Run forward when you are ready to fight. Eventually you will reach Lavos's second phase.

  4. There are three sections of Lavos's body that you can attack - the torso and both arms. The torso will be resistant to damage until the arms are gone, so focus on them first.

  5. Lavos has a plethora of attacks he can use against you. The ones to watch out for are the Laser Beams (that shoot from his nipples, interestingly enough). These hit all party members and can deal somewhere in the range of 300 HP in damage. Likewise, the attack called Dark Flame's Embrace can deal 400-500 HP in damage to all party members.

  6. Beware also for the spell called Curse. This will disable a single character's status ailment immunity, meaning he or she can be infected by confuse, blind, etc. regardless of his or her equipment. Be on the lookout for the spell Dark Will which causes Confuse. Use Panaceas if necessary.

  7. The best strategy to eliminate the arms is to use magical attacks that hit all three of Lavos's body parts at once. Crono's Luminaire, Magus's Dark Matter, and Lucca's Flare all work well in this regard. Additionally Crono and Ayla's double tech Falcon Strike can hit both arms at once and deal quite a bit of damage.

  8. In the meantime, use Frog, Robo, or another to cast heal spells on all of your party members. Don't be afraid to use Megaelixirs if you get hit by a particularly devastating attack.

  9. TIP: Barrier and Shield Spheres can be helpful during this fight. Remember that Magus and Lucca can cast Barrier and Shield (called Protect) respectively. Use these abilities if either is in your party.

  10. Once you eliminate the arms, Lavos's torso will no longer be resistant to damage. That being the case, do not be afraid to go all out on it. Keep using powerful magic in combination with double and triple techs. Be cautious, however, and keep healing.

  11. Eventually Lavos's body will fail, but don't celebrate yet, the fight is far from over.

Third Phase

  1. Lavos's third phase will be made up of three parts - a humanoid creature and two bits. You will need to defeat all three to beat Lavos for good.
  2. TIP: The left bit is immune to magic (in fact it gains life from magical attacks). The right bit is resistant to physical attacks. Therefore, use the opposite on each (magic on the right, physical attacks on the left). The central humanoid figure seems to be affected by both types of attacks.
  3. Take out the left bit first. This bit can heal the central humanoid. A strong single tech like Crono's Frenzy should deal it quite a bit of damage. Likewise a double tech can take it out fairly easily.
  4. Now you will be facing only the central humanoid and the right bit. Begin casting powerful magic like Luminaire and Dark Matter. Beware, however, for the following attacks:
    1. The humanoid swipes a single party member with its claws, causing around 400 HP in damage.
    2. Demon Star - a spell that halves everyone's HP.
    3. Diabolic Whisper - dishes out a random status ailment. Keep in mind that this version of Lavos can also cast Curse and disable your status immunity. Luckily, any Curses cast on your party members during the second phase of Lavos will not carry over to this fight. Once again, use Panaceas if necessary.
    4. Dreamreaver - the ultimate magical attack that can deal around 300 HP to all party members.
    5. Grandstone - the ultimate physical attack. This one is particularly devastating as it can deal 400+HP in damage to all party members.
  5. Needless to say you will want to keep your health up during this fight. It takes just one of Lavos's deadlier attacks to kill everyone in your party if you let your HP drop too low. Use Megaelixirs liberally.
  6. Keep casting your most powerful magical attacks (again Luminaire and Dark Matter). This will damage both the humanoid and the right bit. Eventually the humanoid will perish, leaving only the bit on the right.
  7. At some point the bit on the right will lower its defenses in an effort to resurrect the humanoid and left bit. When this happens, unleash all of your most powerful attacks on it. If you have a triple tech available, then this is the time to use it. If you are fast enough and you deal it enough damage then you can destroy it and defeat Lavos. This is why it is important to keep hitting it with magic while the humanoid is still alive.
  8. If you are too slow, or can't deal it enough damage, the right bit will revive the other two parts and you must start the process over again.
  9. Repeat the steps above and keep up your party's health. Eventually you will defeat Lavos and save the world.
