Forward to the Past - 65,000,000 B.C.
- YouTube: Back in 65,000,000 B.C. (Time: 9:25)
- After a brief cut scene, your party will awaken in 65,000,000 B.C. You will be inside Ayla's hut. Exit once you regain control.
- Enter the Meeting Grounds. Run through the Meeting Grounds and exit the opposite side.
- Enter the Laruba Ruins. They are located northwest of the Meeting Grounds.
- When you arrive, a child will inform your party that the Reptites have kidnapped Kino. Run north until you see Ayla talking to the Laruba Elder. Ayla will tell the Elder she is going to the Dactyl Nest. Run back south and exit the way you came.
- TIP: The item trader (the man who lives in the hut east of Ayla's home) will have new weapons for trade. If necessary, go to the Hunting Grounds to earn more items to trade for these weapon upgrades.
- Enter the Dactyl Nest. It is east of the Laruba Ruins.
- When you enter the nest area, you will immediately encounter a Cave Ape and two Schist. Take out the Schists first so the Cave Ape cannot throw them at you. Now focus on the ape. Keep moving north.
- At the end of the path you will be attacked by two flying creatures called Avian Rex. Cast Lightning II to quickly take them down. Climb up the stones you see in the wall ahead.
- You will now be on an elevated level. Take the Mid-Ether from the treasure chest to your right. Now head to the left and then south.
- Eventually you will reach an area with three Schist. Take the Mid-Potion from the chest in the lower right hand corner. Attack and defeat the Schists. Now take the rightmost path north.
- Climb up the stones at the end of the path to an even higher level. Exit the screen to the right.
- Defeat the two Cave Apes and Schist that you encounter. Now head north via the stones in the wall behind where the Schist was sitting.
- Run forward along this narrow path. Climb up the next set of stones you see in the wall at the dead end.
- Follow the path as it bends toward the left. Go south. You will see two more Schist. Defeat them and the Cave Ape that appears. Collect the Mesozoic Mail from the treasure chest to their right. Climb up the stones you see to the right.
- Run north. Try to climb up the next set of stones you see. You will be intercepted by two Avian Rex. Defeat them and then climb to the next level. Once you get to the top, run forward and exit to the next screen.
- When you enter the area you will see a brief cut scene where Ayla calls a Pterodactyl. Make your way to where she is standing. Your party will offer to accompany her to the Tyranno Lair.
- NOTE: Ayla will now become a fully selectable member of your party. For this mission, you will be forced to use both Crono and her, leaving only one spot open. Which character should take this spot is totally up to your discretion (as before, you can always change characters at the drop of a hat).
- Your party will now be flying on a trio of Pterodactyls in the overworld. Head south until you reach Ioka Village's two most southerly huts. Now head east. You will see a futuristic castle surrounded by lava. This is your destination. Land near the castle. Enter Tyranno Lair.
- TIP: Although Ayla cannot use magic, it would be worthwhile to take the portal in the Mystic Mountains to The End of Time. There you can save your game, which will no doubt be much needed by this point.
- TIP: There are other activities to accomplish in other times periods, specifically 1,000 A.D. Use the light bucket to warp to Leene Square, 1,000 A.D. There are two things to do while there:
- Visit Lucca's House (south of Truce Village). Go upstairs and talk to her mother. When her father, Taban, arrives, go back downstairs. Talk to Taban, twice. Each time he will give you something specifically designed for Lucca. First is Taban's Helm and the second is Taban's Vest. Of the two, Taban's Helm is more useful (+10 Magic Defense).
- Visit Guardia Castle with Marle in your party. Talk to the King. Afterward, roam about the castle and open any treasure chest you find. They contain fairly strong Elixirs and other useful items.
Tyranno Lair
- YouTube: Tyrano Lair! (Time: 10:16)
- You are now inside Tyranno Lair. Head north and defeat the two Cave Apes and Reptite that patrol the hall.
- You will see two large dinosaur skulls ahead. The one on the left is closed. Enter the one on the right. Walk down the staircase ahead.
- Head south and defeat the two Reptites blocking the path. Head to the right and you will see a jail cell holding several cavemen. Open the gate using the gray button to the right of the rib cage door. The cavemen will flee for their lives.
- Continue walking to the right. Head north and defeat the two Reptites blocking access to the next stairwell. Walk down the stairs.
- Head south and then turn left. You will see three Reptites watching prisoners through a door. Defeat them and then walk to the door they were guarding. Kino will appear on the other side of the door. Talk to Kino. Ayla will scurry inside the cell and free Kino.
- Kino will beckon for you to follow. Before doing so, take the Mid-Ether from the treasure chest in Kino's cell (it looks like a rock). Now exit the room the way Kino left.
- Follow Kino. You will be led all the way back to the castle's entryway (the one with the two huge dinosaur skulls). Kino will open the leftmost skull for you. Enter the skull and run up the stairs beyond.
- You will come to a room where you must go either left or right. Before going anywhere, take note of the two buttons on the floor in the lower right and left hand corners of the screen.
- There are enemies on either side of the screen, just out of sight. To the right there is a Cave Ape and Reptite, to the left a Megasaur and Reptite. Walk over and press the button on the right. A hole should open underneath the Cave Ape/Reptite, plunging them into darkness. Do the same to the left side.
- Now exit the room via the exits next to each of the buttons. They are difficult to see upon first glance. Look for the black indentations in the south wall. Head through the one on the right.
- You will now be on a balcony structure. You will be attacked by an Avian Rex and two Volcanites. After you've eliminated this group you will face down another Avian Rex and two Reptites. Cast Lightning II to lower their defenses and then put them away with regular attacks. Exit the area via the doorway to the right.
- You will be in a small room with two rock-shaped treasure chests ahead of you. Open the chest on the left to obtain the Hi-Potion. DO NOT open the one to the right. If you do, a trap door will open underneath your party. They will fall into the jail cell that you previously saved the cavemen from. Not only does this force you to backtrack, but the Cave Ape, Megasaur, and two Reptites that you previously dropped down the trap doors will be waiting for you.
- Retrace your steps back to the room where you dropped the enemies through the trap doors. This time exit through the left side.
- Defeat the Reptites you encounter once you get outside. Run to your left. You will be ambushed by a single Avian Rex. Defeat it and enter the doorway on your left.
- You will now be in a large room with several holes in the floor. Run forward. The screen will briefly turn black. When it brightens up again you will be facing a Megasaur, a Volcanite, and a Reptite. Cast Lightning II and take out the Megasaur first, followed by the other two baddies.
- The object of this room is to get to its northwest corner. As you run around the holes in the floor you will be teleported to different points in the room. This is more of an annoyance than anything else. Of all the treasure chests in the room, the only really worth paying attention to is the first chest to the left of where you entered (it will not be readily visible when you first enter). Inside is a helm called a Triceratopper.
- As you are about to exit the room, you may be attacked by an Avian Rex, a Volcanite, and a Reptite. Deal with them as you did their predecessors. Run up the stairs to the next area.
- You will emerge into a small room at the top of the stairs. Head south to exit.
- You will once again be outside the castle on a large balcony. Head to the right. You will be attacked by a Reptite and a Volcanite. Make quick work of them and continue to the right. You will pass a gated door. Remember this.
- Next up, an Avian Rex will drop a Megasaur at you from above. Both will attack. Cast Lightning II to lower their defenses and then wail away at them with normal attacks. Exit the area via the doorway on the right.
- You will come to a small room that contains a giant dinosaur skull. There are two buttons on the floor. One opens the skull, the other makes a Megasaur and Volcanite appear. Press the one on the right. Run through the open mouth.
- You will be in a small room. The only thing remarkable about it is a button on the far wall. Push it.
- The button opens the gate that you passed outside. Backtrack to the balcony.
- Head to the left. You will be attacked again by the Avian Rex and Megasaur. Continue to the left and you will be attacked by two Reptites and two Volcanites. Defeat them and try to enter the door. You will be attacked again, this time by a single Reptite and two Volcanites. Defeat them and finally enter the newly opened door.
- You will see Nizbel II directly in front of you. Ignore him for now. Walk around him to the Save Point. Save the game and use a shelter.
- Walk to the stairs ahead. Nizbel II will attack.
Boss - Nizbel II
- YouTube: Nizbel II! Azala and the Black Tyrano! (Time: 9:04)
- The major differences between Nizbel II and the original is that although his defenses are lowered when shocked, they are heightened again when attacked. This means that you need to shock him with Crono's Lightning magic, perform an attack while his defenses are down, and then shock him again.
- TIP: Lightning-based dual techs like Crono and Ayla's Thunder Chomp and Crono and Frog's Lightning Rod work great against Nizbel II. They both shock Nizbel II, lowering his defenses, and deal a good bit of damage. In the aftermath of such an attack a good strategy is to have the third party member follow up with a single tech attack.
- Nizbel II possesses largely the same attacks as his predecessor. These include:
- Running around the room, dealing about 40-50 HP in damage to all party members.
- Attacking a single party member. This deals roughly 60-70 HP in damage.
- Electric Discharge - deals roughly 140 - 200 HP in damage to each member.
- TIP: Devote one party member to healing the others in the aftermath of Nizbell II's Electric Discharge attack.
The Path to Azala
- After defeating Nizbel II, go back and save your game at the Save Point.
- Proceed up the stairs to the next area.
- Exit the small room at the top of the stairs via the black indentation to your south. You will again be outside the castle. Head to your right. You will pass a walkway that leads to a gated door. You need to open this.
- Continue to the right as far as you can go. Defeat the Avian Rex that attacks. Enter the door you find here.
- In this room you will see three switches on the floor. One is ahead of you, the other two are on your left and right. The goal is to open the dinosaur skull on the other side of the room.
- Resist pressing any of the buttons except the one directly ahead of you. This will make a Save Point appear to your left. Save your game.
- All you have to do to open the dinosaur skull is walk up to it and press A. Enter the skull.
- Open the treasure chest you find in this small room to obtain a Hi-Ether. Now press the gray button. This opens the gated door that you passed outside. Backtrack to the gated door.
- Walk to the let and then head north along the middle walkway. A Terasaur will block your path. Defeat it. Two more Terasaurs will then appear. Cast Lightning II and then defeat them. Enter the open doorway ahead.
- You will emerge into a large room. Run forward and Azala will begin speaking. After a few seconds he will escape via the door behind his throne. Collect the Triceratopper and Mid-Ether from the two treasure chests nearby. Follow Azala.
- TIP: It is advantageous to have Frog in your party for this upcoming boss fight due to his powerful Lightning Rod double tech with Crono (not to mention his healing abilities).
- Run forward along the walkway until you reach the boss, Black Tyranno.
Boss - Black Tyranno
- You must contend not only with the large Black Tyranno, but also Azala during this fight.
- Target Azala first. With Azala present, your party will be unable to deal a significant amount of damage to Black Tyranno. As with all the dinosaurs, Lightning-based attacks work well against Azala. Use Thunder Chomp and Lightning Rod (assuming you have Frog in your party) liberally.
- Azala has a number of attacks:
- Psychokinesis - he will use his mind to throw a single party member around. This deals about 55 HP to the misfortunate character.
- Teleport Boulder - he teleports in a huge stone and throws it on top of a single party member. This also deals about 55 HP.
- Telepathy - puts a single party member to Sleep. Use a Panacea to revive him or her.
- Sap - does roughly 20 HP in damage to all party members.
- Once you defeat Azala you can turn your full attention to Black Tyranno. Use electric dual techs against him like the previously mentioned Thunder Chomp and Lightning Rod.
- The biggest thing to watch out for is Black Tyranno's super attack. You know this is coming when the screen says "lowers defense, begins storing power." The game then gives you a countdown from 5 until he unleashes this attack. This is the time to hit him with powerful dual tech attacks like Falcon Strike (Crono and Ayala). Simultaneously you want to heal your party members to above 300 HP. This is going to hurt. When the counter reaches zero, Black Tyranno will spit a ton of fire on all party members. This deals about 250-300 HP in damage to each party member.
- In the aftermath of the super attack, try to heal your party members. Frog's Healing spell and his dual tech with Ayla, Slurp Kiss, are especially good in this regard. Crono should have the Life ability by this point. Use it to revive any fallen comrades.
- In addition to the super attack, Black Tyranno has two other main attacks:
- Chew - the monstrosity will suck one character into his mouth. This deals about 200 HP in damage to that character and allows Black Tyranno to gain the same amount of health back.
- Fire Breathe - unlike the super attack, this only targets one character. Provided you are wearing a Ruby Vest this should only deal about 30 HP in damage.
- Overall this boss should be easy to defeat as long as you keep your party at high health and wail on him whenever his defenses are down.
The Magic Kingdom - 12,000 B.C.
- YouTube: Lavos Arrives! The Kingdom of Zeal (Time: 10:58)
- When you regain control you will be in the overworld, just south of the Tyranno Lair Ruins. Enter the ruins.
- Enter the time gate.
- Your party will appear in a cave. Exit through the front entrance.
- You will now be in a snowy overworld screen. Head east and enter the Skyway building.
- Step on the red circle. It will teleport you skyward.
- You will reappear in another red circle, this time surrounded by green vegetation. Run forward and exit the skyway.
- You will be in another overworld screen. As you can see the Magic Kingdom is made up of a series of floating islands. Enter the city to your right named Enhasa.
Enhasa
- There isn't a tremendous amount of things to do in Enhasa. Nevertheless, it is worth talking to the locals to get a better sense of the storyline.
- Walk to the northwest corner of the city. You will encounter a strange child who makes a morbid prediction about a member of your party. Step into the blue circle near where you meet the child to restore your HP/MP.
- TIP: Enhasa holds a secret. Located around the city are three books. Each one is aligned with an element - wind, water, and fire. Open the books in the following order:
- Water - the book is located in the northeast corner of the city, near two beds.
- Wind - located in the northwest corner, near where you meet the strange child.
- Fire - the first book you see when you enter Enhasa.
- If you open the books in the correct order, a secret passage will open near the entrance to Enhasa. Go into the secret passage. Inside you will find blue Nu sleeping. Talk to him. Answer "yes" if he asks if you want to challenge him. You will now have to fight six Nus at once. They are powerful foes and can bring your health down to 1 in a single hit. Don't worry for even if they defeat you it isn't game over.
- The best strategy is to keep casting second level magic attacks (Lightning II, Fire II, etc.) that hit all the creatures at once. Place Chrono, Frog, and Marle in your party. Have Crono keep casting Lightning II while Marle and Frog perform their dual tech Ice Water (which damages all the creatures). Do not bother healing. Eventually you will finish all the Nus off. Your reward for winning will be a Magic Capsule, a Speed Capsule, and a great amount of experience and tech points.
- When you are done wandering around Enhasa, exit the city.
- At the overworld screen, head to the Land Bridge north of Enhasa. Enter the Land Bridge and step into the red circle.
- You will be beamed back down to the snowy surface of the Earth. Head north and enter the next Skyway.
- Step into the red circle and you will be beamed back up to the heavens.
Kajar
- YouTube: Still in the Zeal kingdom! (Time: 10:58)
- You will now be on the largest sky island. Walk west and enter the city of Kajar.
- NOTE: You can visit the Blackbird if you wish. It is just west of Kajar. There is nothing to do here yet, but it gives you a chance to meet Dalton, who will soon become an important character.
- You should now be inside Kajar. Like Enhasa, this city also holds a secret. You need to open the green books in the same order as you did in Enhasa. The order is water, wind, fire. Here are the location of the books:
- Water - When you enter the city, head north up the stairs ahead. You will see two tables nearby. The water book will be on the north most table.
- Wind - from the entrance to Kajar, head to the right. Run down the hall until you see a table with two books on it. The wind book is the one resting on the blue tablecloth.
- Fire - there is a Nu sleeping in the middle of the city. The fire book lies in front of him.
- Once you open the books in the right order a secret passage will open directly to the right of the fire book. Enter the passage.
- There is a doll at the center of this secret room. Inside is the Black Gemstone. This Gemstone enables the Eternal Darkness triple tech when Marle, Lucca, and Magus make up your party.
- There is not much else to do in Kajar. You may buy Potions from the sleeping Nu near the fire book if you wish. Otherwise, exit to the overworld.
Zeal Palace
- YouTube: Pendant Fully Charged! Back to 65,000,000 B.C. AGAIN! (Time: 10:57)
- From Kajar, head east and enter the Small Cave.
- Run forward and enter the column of light. This will transport you to an identical looking room elsewhere. Run forward and exit the room.
- You will be back in the overworld. Head east and enter another Small Cave.
- You will see another light column. Repeat the same steps as before until you are back in the overworld screen. Enter Zeal Palace.
- Head to the northeast corner of Zeal Palace. Enter the large doorway to the left of the sleeping Nu. You will enter a hallway. There are doorways on both the left and right. Enter the one on your right. You will enter Princess Schala's bedroom. Watch the cut scene between Schala and Janus (the creepy kid you met in Enhasa).
- Walk back to the central area of Zeal Palace. Once you get back turn left and walk down the stairs. From here head north, up another set of stairs, and past another sleeping Nu. Enter the doorway at the top of the stairs.
- Run forward. You will see Schala use her pendant to open a sealed door. Walk up to the door and press A. Crono will try to use Marle's pendant on the door, but to no effect.
- Backtrack to the main area of Zeal Palace. Run forward until you are between two staircases to your left and right. Walk up the stairs to your left. You will see another Nu sleeping in front of a doorway. Walk up to the Nu and press A to make it move. Enter the doorway.
- Run forward through the long hallway to the next room.
- You will see the Mammon Machine in front of you. Walk up to it and press A. Crono will use the machine to charge Marle's pendant.
- Return to the enchanted door you saw Schala enter. Walk up to the door and Crono will open it with his pendant. This opens the door. Walk inside.
- NOTE: Now you can open all the doors with this seal on it. This includes the doors you saw in the Future and the black sealed chests you've come across during your travels. Consult the Guide to Sealed Chests and Doors for more information.
- You will see Dalton, Schala, and the mysterious Prophet all gathered around Queen Zeal. Walk forward, into the room. Queen Zeal will grow angry and tell Dalton to arrest you. He in turn calls a Golem to attack you.
Boss - Golem
- NOTE: This fight is tough, but luckily even if you lose, it's not game over. Don't waste a lot of your health items unless you have an insatiable desire to win.
- The Golem will copy each of your magical attacks and then use them against you. For instance, if you damage it with Lightning II, it will unleash it's own Lightning attack that deals about 150 HP to all party members.
- The Golem has two physical attacks. The first is the Iron Sphere, which halves the HP of whomever it hits. The second is a group of fireballs it shoots at a single party member. These are often lethal as they can deal upwards of 400 HP in damage.
- If you really want to defeat this boss then play super defensively. As with many fights, have one character constantly heal the others. A character that can heal many at once like Frog or Robo is good to have in your party. Frog and Ayla's double tech Slurp Kiss is especially handy.
- As far as attacking goes, try to focus on using magic against the Golem. It will respond with a copy of your magical attack which while damaging is far less so than its physical attacks. Specifically use Lucca's fire against it. The Golem will respond with a fire attack, but if your party members are still wearing Ruby Vests, then its attack will be far less effective.
Imprisoned, Freed, and Exiled
- Dalton will imprison your party regardless of the outcome of the Golem battle. Schala, however, will soon come and save you.
- Schala will ask you to free the Guru of Life at the Mountain of Woe. The Prophet soon intervenes. He forces you to show him the time portal. Your party is then thrown into the portal and Schala seals it shut with her magic. For the time being you cannot get back to 12,000 B.C.
- You will be transported to 65,000,000 B.C. Be sure to heal your characters. If you lost the Golem fight they will all be at 1 HP. Exit the cave.
- Once you are in the overworld, walk to the south and climb on the Pterodactyls.
- Land near the Mystic Mountains. Enter the mountains. Make your way through the dinosaurs and enter the time portal at the top of the mountain. This will transport you back to The End of Time.
- Talk to the old man at the End of Time. He will suggest you find the Wings of Time, a device that will allow you to return to 12,000 B.C.
