This is part 14 of our complete Chrono Trigger DS game guide, featuring Aftermath.
Guide written by David Taylor

Aftermath - 1,000 A.D.
After a cut scene you will be given control over Crono and Marle in Leene Square. Wander around and talk to the various familiar faces that are hanging out in the square.
When you are finished head north to Lucca's invention. View the ending. Congratulations on beating Chrono Trigger DS! Now check out the alternate endings by starting a New Game+.
Dream's End
After you complete the game, three Dimensional Vortexes will appear in different time periods. To access these, load up your most recent saved game (the one with the completed game data). You should reappear within Lavos right before you fight its second phase. Take the portal back To the End of Time.
NOTE: Simply starting a New Game+ won't cut it since you need the modified Epoch (the one with wings) to access these new areas.
You must beat each of the three Dimensional Vortexes to access the hidden boss and secret ending of Chrono Trigger DS.
Each vortex will take you through a series of random areas before warping your party to a new area that is unique to that vortex. These random areas are all dungeons that you conquered during the main game, so they shouldn't be much trouble. The walkthrough below will begin from when you enter the new, unique area of each vortex.
NOTE: Before each unique area you will be given the opportunity to save the game and leave the vortex.
Dimensional Vortex - 12,000 B.C.
- The Dimensional Vortex is located on the main island, near the Surviving Village. Land nearby and enter the vortex.
- Head north and step in the teleporter.
- NOTE: As previously mentioned, the vortex will send your party to random, but familiar areas from earlier in the game. The only thing really different will be two new enemies - the Slate Imp and Pink Imp. These guys are a bit tougher than normal imps, but can be defeated with normal attacks.
- NOTE: There is, however, one area that is new. This is a prehistoric area that takes place in a narrow canyon. When you begin, run south and then to the right around the stone that splits the path. After defeating two imps, check the area to the right, under the tree canopy, for a secret path. This path leads you to a treasure chest that contains the Angel Tiara (for female characters only).
- After the Save Point, you will materialize in a snowy area similar to Death Peak. Head to your right. Defeat the two Pink Imps and two Slate Imps that attack. Climb up the stone ladder to the next level. Climb up another ladder ahead of you to reach an even higher level.
- Run past the cave you see and climb up another stone ladder. Climb up another stone ladder to the right of the dead tree (ignore the second cave entrance).
- Head to the left once you get to the top of the ladder. Open the treasure chest to receive a Lapis. Now head to the right. Climb up the small stone ladder at the end of the pathway.
- Climb up the stone ladder ahead of you (once again ignore the cave). Defeat the two Slate Imps and two Pink Imps at the top of the ladder. Head to the left and climb up another ladder. Head north to the next screen.
- Climb up the stone ladder ahead and another after that. Defeat the four Bone Knights that attack you. A massive magical attack will quickly best them.
- Head to the right. Run all the way to the end of the path and slide down the ice slope.
- Your party will slide down this massive icy slope unless you press up on the D-Pad. While pressing up, run all the way to the left. Now move down the slope. Climb down the first stone steps you see and enter the cave.
- Climb down the stone steps ahead of you. Open the treasure chest you find to collect the Shadowplume Robe. This is an armor upgrade for Magus.
- Climb back up the ladder and head right. Engage and defeat the Bone Knight and two Chaos Mages. Note that the mages are immune to shadow magic and are resistant to other forms. Use physical attacks to defeat them. Climb down the stone ladder they were guarding.
- Watch out because the ground below the ladder is slick. Head to the right. Climb down the stone ladder at the end of the path.
- Head all the way to the right. Ignore the stone ladder and exit to the next screen.
- You will be in a large open area. There is a Chaos Mage and Bone Knight to your right. Either avoid or engage them. Head to the northeast portion of the area.
- You will see a monster patrolling the area that looks similar to Heckran. Engage it. This is a Snowbeast. Its attack power increases each time you attack it. It will mostly use water based attacks like Water II and Ice II against you. Employ powerful techs to defeat it. Afterward head southeast from where it was standing.
- You will encounter two Chaos Mages and a Bone Knight. Defeat them and then head south (it won't initially look like you can do this). You will pass under and overpass into another area.
- Head south and you will see another Snowbeast. Engage the Snowbeast. You will also have to fight a Chaos Mage (deal with him first). Head to the right of where the battle took place. Open the treasure chest you find to receive the Regal Gown. This is an armor upgrade for the female characters that reduces all damage by 1/3.
- Head back to north of where you fought the last Snowbeast. From where it was standing, head to the left. You will reach a embankment. Defeat the three Bone Knights and single Chaos Mage that attacks. Walk up the embankment.
- Head south and you will see another Snowbeast patrolling the area. Engage and defeat it. Now head all to the right and exit the screen.
- Head to the right. Defeat the two Snowbeasts that attack. Keep following the path as it winds north and takes you to a wind gate. Enter the gate.
- You will be in a shadowy outdoor area. This is the Twilight Grotto. Run to the right and keep following the path. Eventually it will take you to a Save Point. Save the game.
- Continue along the path. Pass the wind gate on your left. Keep following the path. At some point Marle states that someone is calling her. The game now forces you to include her in your party.
- TIP: Choose your party wisely for these are the three characters you must use against the upcoming boss. In addition to Marle, I recommend including Crono and another strong magical character like Magus or Lucca in your party.
- You will appear in Guardia Castle. Head to the room on the left portion of this level. You will see a replica of Marle. This is the Alabaster Shade. It will attack you. Get ready to rumble!
- This can be a tough boss fight. There are a few things to know about the Alabaster Shade:
- The Shade has all of Marle's abilities. A normal crossbow attack can deal up to 300 HP in damage to its target. The shade will also frequently use Ice II which deals about about 120-200 HP in damage to everyone.
- Keep attacking it with powerful magic spells like Luminaire, Flare, etc. The Shade has fairly high evasion, which means many physical attacks will miss altogether.
- The Shade, like, Marle can cast a healing spell on herself (which gives her 2500 HP), so keep up the onslaught.
- Inevitably your health will start to run low due to the Shade's constant barrage of attacks. Use Megaelixirs with willful abandon. Also, since you have Marle in your party you might as well put her healing abilities to good use. Use Life II if you have it because more than likely you will be reviving a number of party members.
- Marle will receive a boost in stats after you defeat the replica. You will be returned to the overworld screen circa 12,000 B.C.
Dimensional Vortex - 1,000 A.D.
- Board the Epoch and travel to 1,000 A.D. Land near the dimensional vortex to the right of Truce Village. Enter the vortex.
- Run north and enter the teleporter.
- NOTE: Through the randomly generated areas you will encounter two new enemies - the Ogan Youth and Ogan Chieftan. There is nothing particularly noteworthy about these foes except that you will want to eliminate the ones with weapons first since they possess stronger attacks.
- You will be teleported into a volcano area. Head north along the path. Exit the area.
- You will see three Dire Rats ahead of you. Engage and defeat them with normal attacks. Head right, along the land bridge.
- Keep following the bridge as it cuts across the lava pool. Along the way you will encounter a Fireball and two more Dire Rats. Defeat them and keep going.
- When you reach solid ground, head left. Enter the cave you see. Inside will be two treasure chests. Open them to find an Athenian Water and Master's Crown. Exit the cave.
- Now head to your right. Follow the path. Eventually you will encounter a Red Ghaj. Defeat him with physical attacks and techs only for he will counter with Flare if you use magic against him. Keep following the path until you exit the area.
- TIP: After you defeat the Red Ghaj, check the black wall to the south of where you fought him. There will be a secret passage. Enter it and follow the path. It will eventually take you out of the volcano cave area to an outdoor area. Open the chest you find to collect the Dreamreaper, a new weapon for Magus.
- Head north as far as you can go. Turn right at the end of the path. Fight the two Fireballs. Continue to the right. Defeat the four Dire Rats that attack. You preferably want to use a magical attack that hits all of them since if left alive they will drain you MP in a rather annoying fashion. Continue to the right and climb down the rope ladder at the end of the path.
- Head south and climb down the next ladder. You will be attacked by another Red Ghaj. Use the same tactics to defeat him. Continue south.
- As you follow the path you will eventually see three Fireballs. You can engage them or simply walk on by. Either way, head south along the path. Follow the path until you exit the screen.
- TIP: Check the dark wall to your right to the right of the three Fireballs. There is a secret passage here. This leads to a room with a treasure chest. Open it to receive the Spellslinger weapon for Lucca. It is another chance weapon that deals damage according to the last digit of her MP.
- Head to the left as far as you can go. Climb up the rope ladder to your north. You will encounter two Deathcreepers. Defeat them with normal attacks. Afterward, head to your right.
- Climb up the two rope ladders. Head left and climb down another ladder. Climb up yet another ladder. You will now be faced with the option of climbing up a ladder to your left or right. Climb the one on the left first. At the top will be a Strength Capsule. Now climb up the one to the right.
- You will encounter four Deathcreepers at the top of the ladder. Use a massive physical or magical attack to wipe them all out at once. Afterward climb down the ladder to the right of where they were. Collect the Elixir from the treasure chest. Now head back to where you fought the Deathcreepers and climb up the nearby ladder. Exit through the doorway at the top.
- You will see a switch nearby. Press the switch. Head south and then left. Defeat the Red Ghaj that attacks.
- Head left. You will now be back at the beginning of the level. The switch you pressed earlier created the rock bridge that you just walked across. Head north to the next room.
- Ignore or fight the Dire Rats. Instead of running to the right this time, head north instead. The switch you pressed will have revealed a rope ladder. Climb down the ladder. Head right and enter the nearby cave.
- Head north and press the switch that reads "crater surveillance ladder." Exit the room the way you entered.
- You will be going over familiar territory for the next little bit. Climb back up the ladder and walk to where the three Dire Rats are patrolling. Now head to the right, back across the land bridge. Run around the lava pit to the right and exit the area to the next room.
- Head north and then to the right. Pass by the Fireballs. After the Fireballs you will see that a ladder has appeared. Climb down the ladder. Open the chest to collect a Hi-Potion. Enter the cave.
- You will be on a narrow land bridge. There is a Fireball in front of you. Run forward and fight the Fireballs. You will actually have to fight three. Continue heading to the right.
- You will see a wind portal ahead. Before you reach it, however, you will be attacked by two Red Ghaj. Defeat them with physical attacks and heal if necessary. Falcon Strike works great here if you have both Crono and Ayla in your party (it will hit both monsters at once). Afterward head into the wind portal.
- You will appear in the Twilight Grotto. Simply follow the path. Eventually you will reach a Save Point. Save your game and continue forward.
- You will pass another wind portal (this will take you out of the vortex). Continue forward and you will encounter Dalton, alive and well from your last battle with him in 12,000 B.C. Get ready to fight!
- Dalton shouldn't be too much trouble, but here are a few tips:
- The fight takes place in two parts. In the first Dalton will use a lot of the same spells you have in your arsenal such as Fire II, Lightning II, etc. These will all be called different names for Dalton (for example his Plasma is the same spell as Crono's Lightning II). Since your party has a lot of major magic defense (Prism Helms, etc.) these will deal limited damage. Use Barrier Spheres and mass healing spells/items in necessary.
- The only thing to really watch out for during this first phase is his fireball attack which will deal about 200 plus HP in damage to a single party member.
- There are no real strategies per say, just wail on him with your strongest attacks.
- Eventually Dalton will begin to falter. He will get a "second wind." This marks the second part of the boss fight.
- Use regular attacks against Dalton. This is because any techs used against him will be met with an MP buster that steals all of your MP. Fortunately your characters will more than likely be equipped with Prism Specs and other accessories that boost the amount of damage they deal with normal attacks.
- NOTE: You can certainly keep using techs and then Ethers, but this will quickly exhaust your supply (not to mention take a turn where you could be attacking Dalton instead).
- Dalton will begin attacking you with stronger spells such as Dark Matter, Flare, and Luminaire (all of which are called something different). These each deal around 100-140 HP to each party member (provided you have lots of magical protection). He will also begin using Iron Sphere which, you may recall, halves a party member's life.
- Keep up the attacks and heal when necessary. When you defeat him Dalton will unleash the Violent Belch which deals minimal damage. Before escaping Dalton says that he is going to raise an army in Porre. This is meant to foreshadow the events of the game's sequel, Chrono Cross.
- Now is the time to heal if you need to do so. Continue north and keep following the path. Eventually Crono will step forward and you will be forced to include him as a member of your party. Pick your party. It is advisable to include a member with good healing abilities like Marle or Robo. Afterward you will be warped to Leene Square to fight a carbon copy of Crono called the Steel Shade.
- As with the Alabaster Shade, the Steel Shade is a tough boss fight. It has high evasion, high stamina, and can use any of Crono's attacks. Here are some tips:
- IMPORTANT: For this fight you are going to absolutely want to have armor and accessories that boost your magic defense. This means Prism Helms for everyone (or a Prism Dress for one of the ladies). The Regal Gown (for female characters) and the Shadowplume Robe (for Magus) are also beneficial.
- Don't even waste your time casting light based spells like Lightning II or Luminaire. The shade is immune to them.
- The shade seems to want to focus on attacking Crono more than the other party members. Use Shield Spheres and Barrier Spheres on him. Heal him when necessary.
- The Shade will frequently attack and counter with a critical hit (70-120 HP), an energy blast (about 80 HP in damage) and worst of all Rend (similar to Cleave) which can deal 100-180 HP in damage. He will use all three attacks often, so keep everyone's health up.
- Likewise, the shade will use Crono's lightning attacks. Lightning II isn't that big of a deal, but Luminaire (here called Scintillation) can deal anywhere from 220-250 HP to each party member. That is providing you have high magic defense on all your characters. If not, then the Luminaire attack can deal more than 800 HP in damage and potentially kill all three characters at once. Make sure the Shade doesn't lower your health too low with his normal attacks and then finishes your party off with Luminaire.
- TIP: Cast Haste on your party members if you have Marle in your group. This will help counter the Shade's fast attack speed.
- There isn't too much of a strategy except to avoid using Lightning attacks. With Crono use physical techs like Frenzy and Cleave. Double techs with Crono and other party members that do not use magic are also applicable (for example the Falcon Strike with Ayla). Use one party member to heal and just wail on the Shade with powerful spells (Dark Matter, Flare, etc.). Eventually you will defeat him.
- Afterward Crono will get a big boosts to his stats and the game will deposit you back in the overworld.
