Varieties of Socks
Christmas socks may come in several different varieties. Tube socks are more for men, along with over the calf socks. Many Christmas socks are knee-high socks or crew socks adorned with Christmas motifs like Santa, snowflakes or reindeer. You may also be able to find "toe socks" - socks that actually have spaces for each toe.
A Brief History of Socks
The earliest type of sock was made by primitive man by gathering animals skins up around the ankles and tying them. Thankfully for us, the art of sock-making evolved and by the 8th century BCE Romans were wearing makeshift socks made of matted animal hair. Later on, more modern socks were knitted by hand. Sock-making improved dramatically in 1589 with the invention of the knitting machine, allowing socks to be made six times faster than by hand.
