Christmas Poems for Kids

Christmas poems are a fun activity for kids during the holidays, often including humorous imagery and experiences. These poems, which often include common Christmas imagery like Santa Claus, can also be added to holiday cards and e-mails, or recited during Christmas plays or programs. They can also be printed out, decorated and displayed as beautiful and festive Christmas art! If your children are interested in Christmas poetry this season, why not have them write their own? Children tend to have wonderful imaginations - have them write out their feelings about the season in poetry. These poems can then be recited at Christmas family gatherings or added to Christmas cards.

"The Night Before Christmas" Excerpt

  • 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house,
  • Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
  • The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
  • In the hope that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
  • The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
  • While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
  • And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
  • Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap;
  • When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
  • I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
  • Away to the window I flew like a flash,
  • Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
  • The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
  • Gave the lustre of midday to objects below—
  • When what to my wondering eyes should appear
  • But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer. http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/christmas/poems-rhymes/the-night-before-christmas.html

''A Catastrophe'' Kids Christmas Poem

  • If old Kriss Kringle should forget
  • To travel Christmas eve,
  • I tell you now, I think next day
  • The little folks would grieve.
  • There wouldn't be a single toy,
  • A single box or book,
  • And not a bit of candy in
  • Their stockings when they'd look
  • Because, you see, Kriss Kringle has
  • A "corner" on these things,
  • 'Tis he, and he alone, who in
  • The night our presents brings.
  • Then let us all try to avert
  • This sad catastrophe,
  • And hope Kriss Kringle may at least
  • Remember you and me. http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/christmas/poems-rhymes/a-catastrophe.html

Christmas History

Christmas is a Christian celebration meant to mark the birth of Jesus. In the U.S., Christmas was not actually observed by the pilgrims who came to American in the 1600s. In Boston, for example, Christmas was actually "outlawed" from 1659 to 1681. This stemmed from England's Puritan's efforts to "clean up" Christianity and thus, any celebrations deemed frivolous. Over the decades, Christmas began to take hold in the U.S. and in 1870, Christmas was declared a federal holiday.http://www.thehistoryofchristmas.com/ch/in_america.htm
