All About Crossword Puzzles
The crossword puzzle was created in 1913 by Arthur Wynne. The original was shaped like a diamond and appeared in an American paper called New York World. Wynne based his game off of an old game played in Pompeii called Magic Squares. About.com: Crossword Puzzles
Wynne's game was a popular New York World weekly feature, but the real crossword puzzle craze didn't kick off until 1924, when a small publishing house called Simon & Schuster released the first book collection of crossword puzzles. This craze inspired crossword puzzles to appear on a number of clothing and jewelry items.
