Chelios was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol following a failed sobriety road test on December 28, 2009. However, a judge dismissed the case on February 12, 2010 due to a lack of probable cause.http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/news/story?id=4905089 One issue was likely the wobbly way Chelios attempted to walk a straight line, but his defense attorney suggested that his multiple knee surgeries would explain that.http://www.suntimes.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/2040676,chris-chelios-dui-charge-021010.article
On May 8, 2009, reports surfaced that Chelios owes $78,000 in back taxes on his $2.9 million Detroit-area home. Red Wings spokesperson claims the glitch came after Chelios switched accounting firms and the outstanding balance will be paid within days.CBSSports.com: Red Wings' Chelios Owes $78K in Back Taxes on Home

Chicago and Beyond
Chelios played nine seasons in his hometown of Chicago. He served as team captain from 1995 until he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on March 23, 1999. Blending in with the many veterans in Detroit, Chelios won his second Stanley Cup with the Wings in 2002. He set several personal records in the recent years with the Wings, including the most games played by an American born player and also the most penalty minutes of any active player in the league.Red Wings: Chris Chelios He won his third Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008.
One of Chelios's best friends is Scrubs actor John C. McGinley. In several episodes of the popular TV series, McGinley's character Dr. Perry Cox is seen wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey, most times with the name Chelios and his number 24 on the back. The year of the NHL Lockout, McGinley wore the jersey of the "Motor City Mechanics", a barnstorming team that Chelios and several others put together to play games during the lockout.
