  • Chinese officials have reported that areas near the epicenter of the Sichuan Earthquake are in danger of being flooded by landslide-dammed rivers.

Police evacuated more than 197,000 people from the area on May 31, 2008.

Soldiers raced to dig flood dams, construct dikes and create channels to ease the pressure on the river.

Officials have identified more that 30 rivers that have been dammed by landslides as a result of the May 12, 2008, earthquake.

They fear that these dams could collapse and flood the villages and refugee camps that lie downriver.
