Chicken fried steak, also known as country fried steak is a dish popular in the southern and central-western United States. Chicken fried steak is made using steak, (typically round steak) that has been breaded or floured and fried the same way as fried chicken.

- Cut steak into 3x3 squares
- Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. (both sides)
- Fill a small paper or plastic bag with flour.
- Add 1 or 2 pieces of steak to the flour, shake until meat is coated.
- Heat approximately 1/2 cup oil in a frying pan.
- Add flour coated meat to pan on medium high heat.
- Brown on both sides.
- Add to hot pan 2 cups of water
- Bring to a boil.
- Make sure you maintain the water in the pan, if it reduces to low, add more water.
- Cover and let simmer for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Remove meat from pan.
- Use reduction and pan scraps as the gravy base.
- Add 2 more cups of water, increase heat. (or milk)
- Add flour until thicken.
- Return meat back to the gravy. (optional)
- Serve with mashed potatoes.
