Chicken Fried Steak

  • Chicken fried steak, also known as country fried steak is a dish popular in the southern and central-western United States. Chicken fried steak is made using steak, (typically round steak) that has been breaded or floured and fried the same way as fried chicken.

  • Directions

    1. Cut steak into 3x3 squares
    2. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. (both sides)
    3. Fill a small paper or plastic bag with flour.
    4. Add 1 or 2 pieces of steak to the flour, shake until meat is coated.
    5. Heat approximately 1/2 cup oil in a frying pan.
    6. Add flour coated meat to pan on medium high heat.
    7. Brown on both sides.
    8. Add to hot pan 2 cups of water
    9. Bring to a boil.
    10. Make sure you maintain the water in the pan, if it reduces to low, add more water.
    11. Cover and let simmer for 30 to 45 minutes.
    12. Remove meat from pan.
    13. Use reduction and pan scraps as the gravy base.
    14. Add 2 more cups of water, increase heat. (or milk)
    15. Add flour until thicken.
    16. Return meat back to the gravy. (optional)
    17. Serve with mashed potatoes.
