Chichen Itza is is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya Civilization located in the northern center of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the Yucatan state, present-day Mexico. Despite its notoriety it has been speculated that the city was not a major center of the Mayan Civilization. Nevertheless, it is one of the most historically important and significant archaeological sites built by the Mayan Civilization. The fusion of Mayan construction techniques with new elements from central Mexico make Chichen Itza one of the most important examples of the Mayan-Toltec Civilization in Yucatan.
The City
The site of Chichen Itza has 8 major structures still remaining. The most notable is the Temple of Kukulkan, commonly referred to as El Castillo. El Castillo is a large, 78 foot tall step pyramid dominating the center of the city. The other major structures are the "Temple of the Warriors", "The Great Ball Court", "High Priest's Temple", "Las Monjas", "El Caracol", "Akab Dzib" and "Old Chichen".
