Black Sox Scandal
The darkest moment in White Sox franchise history was the Black Sox Scandal. In the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds it was discovered that several players would purposely play poorly to enable the Reds to win the series, for their own financial gain. Those players were Eddie Cicotte, Oscar Felsch, Arnold Gandil,Shoeless Joe Jackson, Fred McMullin, Charles Risberg, George Weaver, and Claude Williams, who were all banned for life for their involvement in the gambling ring. The story has been referenced in popular culture several times, including in the films 8 Men Out and Field of Dreams. The story is especially tragic because it has been alleged that the players were unfairly underpaid, and that the game was robbed of the talents of Shoeless Joe Jackson who is widely recognized as one of the greatest players ever to play the game.
