Major League Baseball players can be traded if they are under contract or if they were drafted in the previous year. Trades can be made at any time between the end of the World Series and July 31st of the following season, which is the non-waiver trade deadline.http://assets.espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html
After the non-waiver deadline, a player must clear waivers before he can be traded. When a team places a player on waivers, other teams have three days to submit claims for him. If a team submits a claim, the waiving team can either arrange a trade with the claiming team, pull the player off waivers, or award him to the claiming team outright. The White Sox acquired outfielder Alex Rios on waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2009 season.http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2009/08/white-sox-acquire-alex-rios-.htmlhttp://assets.espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html
If more than one team submits a waiver claim for a player, the team with the worst record in the same league as the player's current team is awarded the claim. If no team within a player's league submits a claim, the team with the worst record in the other league is awarded the claim. If a player clears waivers, the club can assign him to the minors, trade him (even after the trade deadline) or release him outright.http://assets.espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html
If a player has logged ten years of major league service time, including the last five with his current club, he earns no-trade protection and has the right to decline any trade.http://assets.espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html
The most significant trade in recent White Sox history was the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres on August 1st, 2009. Despite a lingering ankle injury and a failed attempt to land Peavy earlier in the year, Sox GM Kenny Williams traded four young pitchers for the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner. The pitchers were righties Dexter Carter and Adam Russell and lefties Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda. Peavy is expected to be the Sox' No. 2 starter in 2010 behind Mark Buehrle and help anchor a talented rotation that also includes Gavin Floyd, John Danks and Freddy Garcia.http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/news/story?id=4369814
