History of the Chicago Tribune
The Chicago Trubune was founded in 1847 and published the first edition on June 10,1847. This edition was 400 issues printed on a hand press. In 1871 the offices were burned in the Great Chicago Fire yet printed an editorial 2 days later that '"Chicago Shall Rise Again"'
The Editor of the Tribune at that time was Joseph Medill and he was also part owner of the Tribune. Medill was elected Mayor and led the city in the reconstruction. He led the Newspaper until his death in 1899.
In 1925, led by Medill's grandsons Robert McCormick and Joseph Medill Patterson The chicago Tribune completed a new headquarters building. One of the first Chicago Skyscrapers known as the "Tribune Tower".
The Tribune has continued to add newspapers to their portfolio and the merger with Times Mirror Company succeeded in making the Tribune one of the top Media Companies.
Television
In 1948 The Tribune joined the early television industry by establishing WGN-TV in Chicago and WPIX-TV in New York. In 1966 a third television station out of Denver, KWGN-TV was purchased. 2 Other stations, 1 in Atlanta and 1 in New Orleans had been purchased in the 1980's and KTLA-TV in Los Angeles was purchased for $510 million in 1985. These acquisitions made the Tribune a leader in television

Dewey defeats Truman
The November 3, 1948 edition of the Tribune was printed with the headline, "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN." The Tribune editors relied on early Gallup polls which showed a Dewey victory. Reportedly, only 15% of the daily newspapers in the U.S. had endorsed Truman.Library of Congress: Dewey Defeats Truman
