Chewbacca

Chewbacca is a fictional character portrayed in Star Wars and played by Peter Mayhew. He is a member of the Wookiee species, co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon and lifelong friend of Han Solo. Due to his copious brown fur and incomprehensible growling, Chewbacca has sometimes been misinterpreted in popular culture as Han Solo's pet; but he is actually a trusted associate, with enviable courage and technological prowess. He speaks his native language, Shyriiwook, fluently—his apparent growling is due to a physical inability to speak Galactic Basic, the common language of the Star Wars Galaxy. A 1978 The Star Wars Holiday Special concludes with a scene featuring Chewbacca on his home planet, celebrating "Life Day" with his Wookiee family.
