Cheney Iraq Visit March 17 2008

  • Vice-President Dick Cheney made a surprise visit to Iraq on March 17, 2008 in order to meet with Iraqi political leaders (including Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki) to discuss legislation that would allow international companies to help develop the country's vast oil resources. While in Baghdad, Cheney also met with Senior U.S. commander General David Petraeus and U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker. Cheney's visit comes only a few days before the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War conflict.

    2. Part of a nine day Middle East trip in which he will also visit Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey, Oman and the Palestinian Territories.
