Chemical Ali was convicted of war crimes against the Iraqi Kurds, and Shiites in the 1980s and 1990s and received four death sentences. His execution had been delayed multiple times for various procedural reasons.

On the same day that he was executed, there was a major bombing in the downtown area of Baghdad. Officials did not know if the three suicide car bombs that exploded at three hotels in Baghdad were related to Chemical Ali's execution. Death Sentences for Crimes Against Humanity
Chemical Ali had been received four death sentences before he was executed on January 25, 2010. The first death penalty came in March 2009, when he was sentenced to death for killing Shiite Muslims in 1999. The second death penalty was issued in June of 2007. Chemical Ali was sentenced to death for the Anfal campaign where about 182,000 people were killed.
