Ali Hassan Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti, aka Chemical Ali, was executed by hanging on January 25, 2010. Chemical Ali was a first cousin of former President of Iraq Saddam Hussein. Al-Majid had been sentenced to four death penalties for various crimes against humanity. His execution had been delayed multiple times for various procedural reasons. The latest death penalty was handed down on January 17, 2010, when he was punished for his role in the 1988 poison gas attacks against the Kurds in Halabja. The poison gas attack killed 5,000 people.
Following his execution, many expected that there would be a video of Chemical Ali's hanging leaked on the to Internet. Four Death Sentences
Al-Majid had been sentenced to four death penalties. In March 2009, he was sentenced to execution for murder of Shiite Muslims in 1999. In June 2007, he was sentenced to the death penalty for the Anfal campaign where an estimated 182,000 people died.
