The story line surrounded the lives of Sam the womanizing bartender, played by Ted Danson, and Diane the educated waitress who was somewhat out of place in the bar scene. The two had an on-off relationship for years until Diane, played by Shelley Long, left the show in 1987. Her replacement was the bar's new corporate manager, Rebecca Howe, played by Kirstie Alley.
  • The Regulars

Woody Harrelson (Woody) joined the cast as an assistant bartender in 1985 after the original assistant bartender "Coach" passed away. Norm, played by George Wendt and Cliff, played by John Ratzenberger were regulars in the bar.
