The PlayStation 3, also known as the PS3, is a gaming device from Sony. It is the third generation of Sony's gaming console and features wireless connectivity via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, high-definition and standard video output, and Blu-ray playback. The device also provides free access to Sony's PlayStation Network for online gaming and digital content delivery. PlayStation Home is a virtual community similar to Second Life, which allows users to create avatars, decorate virtual apartments and visit each other. PlayStation Home also has its own massively multiplayer games, Sodium and Xi.
The PS3 is generally acknowledged to be the most powerful videogame console, though in the past its popularity has suffered as it has been significantly more expensive than its main rival, the Xbox 360. The most recent model is generally known as the PS3 Slim, although its official name is the PS3 120GB. With the release of the new model, previous versions should be available at bargain prices.
The PS3 Slim was announced by Sony on August 19, 2009 Sony and became available worldwide throughout September 2009. In November 2009, Sony added Netflix to the PS3 console. Netflix subscribers can stream movies from their Instant Queue to the PS3, in near DVD quality.
