Chase Utley

Chase Utley is the second baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies. He is widely regarded as one of the best second baseman in Major League Baseball. Utley consistently hits for power, average, steals bases and plays solid defense.

During the 2009 World Series, Utley hit five home runs, tying Reggie Jackson for the most home runs hit in a single World Series. The Phillies lost the series 4 games to 2 to the New York Yankees.

Early Life

Chase Cameron Utley was born in Pasadena, California on December 17, 1978. He would attend the University of California, Los Angeles. While at the UCLA Utley would play baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League. He developed into an elite Collegiate prospect and then garner the attention of Major League Baseball scouts. Minor League Career

Chase Utley made his professional debut with Batavia (A League) on July 30, 2000. He was named Phillies Minor League Player of the Month for August and was second on the team in doubles with 13.

In 2001, Utley was invited to the Phillies major league training camp and spent the entire season with Clearwater (A League). He was named to the Florida State League All Star team after hitting 16 home runs and stealing 19 bases for the season. In the Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game, Utley hit a home run, had two runs batted in, two runs scored and a stolen base.

During spring training in 2002, Utley was converted from a third basemen to a second baseman. He played the sesaon at Scranton-Wilkes Barre (AAA League). Utley lead the team with 17 home runs and won the Paul Owens Award as the best player in the Phillies minor league system.

In 2003, Utley spent most of the season in Scranton, where he was named starting second baseman for International League in AAA All-Star Game. He played some with the Phillies in 2003 and started the 2004 in Scranton before being recalled to the Phillies for good on May 5 when Placido Polonco was put on the disabled list.http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player_career.jsp?player_id=400284&y=2004

Major League Career

Utley would be selected with the 15th pick in the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft. He would make his major league debut on April 4, 2003 with the Philadelphia Phillies. In his two seasons with the Phillies he would struggle to crack the starting line-up with veteran Placido Polanco playing second base. After Polanco was traded in 2005, Utley was established as the everyday second baseman.

In 2006 he would be named to the National League All-Star Team and also represent the United States in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. That same season he would also record a 35 game hitting streak and hit 32 home runs. For his impressive offensive abilities Utley would earn a Silver Slugger Award.

In 2007, Utley signed a seven year contract with the Phillies for $86 million dollars. That season he would help the Phillies win the National League East Division Title, while winning a Silver Slugger award.MLB.com: Chase Utley

In 2008, Utley helped the Phillies win the World Series. During the ceremony following the World Series victory parade, Utley used profanity uttering the teams World Series victory. He later apologized telling children it's not good to use that kind of language.

Following the season Utley won "This Year in Baseball Awards" Postseason Moment of the Year.

In 2009, Chase Utley scored over 100 runs for the fourth consecutive season. His batting average of .282 was the lowest of his career, but he still hit 31 home runs with 93 runs batted in and a career high 23 stolen bases without being caught.http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=400284 He was named by a group of panels which include Hall of Famers and major baseball award winners as the sixth best player currently in baseball.http://www.jsonline.com/sports/45556307.html On October 28 against the New York Yankees in the 2009 World Series, Chase Utley broke the record for most consecutive games reaching base in the playoffs with 26.
