Being the only child, Charlize Theron grew up on a little farm near Benoni, South Africa. She started dancing, learning ballet even danced in Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker suite. She had big dreams of becoming a dancer/star so she traveled to Europe, after wining a local model contest to pursue her modeling career until she decided it wasn't for her. She decided to try ballet, and left for The United States, where in New York City she landed a job at the Joffrey Ballet. Her dancing career soon came to an end with an injury to her knee.

When Theron was 18 years old her mother bought her a one-way ticket to Los Angeles in order to help her daughter reach her dreams of being an actress. In 1994 while she was standing in line on Hollywood Blvd, an agent gave her his business card and told her to learn the language. She did just that, by watching soap operas and It was only about eight months later when she got cast in her first movie role. It was in a b-grade film, where she played a mother sitting in a park. This role only consisted of about three seconds on screen with no lines. After this she found small roles which gave her bigger roles, and now she has won several awards and is a well known actress. In May 1999, she was featured in Playboy, and was then awarded "People" magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the year 2000.
