Charlie Crist is the 44th governor of Florida who ran as an Independent candidate in the 2010 Florida race for the U.S. Senate seat. Born on July 24, 1956, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Crist was raised in St. Petersburg, Florida. Crist attended high school at St. Petersburg High, where he served as class president. He also served as student body vice president at Florida State University. He played college football at Wake Forest University before transferring to Florida State to complete his bachelor’s degree in 1978. Charlie Crist's Political Career
Charlie Crist’s political career began in 1992, when he ran for and won a seat in the Florida State Senate. He served in this position for six years and chaired both the Senate Ethics and Election Committee and the Appropriations Criminal Justice Subcommittee. He was then appointed the Deputy Secretary of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation by then governor, Jeb Bush.
In 2000, Crist was elected Commissioner of Education in a special election. He was the last person elected to this position. In 2002, he ran for and won the position of Florida Attorney General, becoming the first elected Republican attorney general in the state’s history.
