History
Chapman University was founded in 1861 as Hesperian College. The first classes for Hesperian took place on March 4, 1861.Chapman University: The Early Years Hesperian college was forced to close due to an inability to compete against public education and merged with California Christian College. In 1934, the college was renamed Chapman College in honor of benefactor Charles C. Chapman. The college moved to downtown Orange, California, in 1954.
