Chapati

  • Chapati is a type of Indian bread made from flour, water and salt, often used as a side for soups or to make sandwiches.
  • How to Make Chapati

    1. Mix together 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 1/2 cups white flour and 2 teaspoons salt.
    2. Stir 1 cup hot water into the dough and knead it on a floured surface until dough is elastic and uniform. Add a little more water if the mixture does not hold together. It is easier to add water early on rather that later when the dough is already getting uniform.
    3. When the dough is smooth, cut it into 15 even pieces and shape them into thin flat disks with a floured surface and rolling pin. The disks should be as thin as tortillas.
    4. Heat a slightly greased skillet on high until the grease starts to smoke. Add in the chapatis one at a time, cooking 30 seconds on each side. This goes very fast so it's a good idea to have all the chapatis rolled out in advance.
    5. If desired, brush with melted butter and serve warm.
