Chandra Levy was a 24-year-old intern at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, D.C., who disappeared on or around April 30, 2001. Police announced in May of 2002, that remains matching her dental records had been found in Rock Creek Park in northwest Washington. Her death was classified as a homicide and an investigation was launched.

On February 20, 2009, police contacted Levy's parents and told them that they were very close to arresting the murderer. After Levy's disappearance, it was revealed that she had engaged in an affair with married California Congressman Gary Condit. Levy and her parents lived in Condit's district. Condit initially denied engaging in an affair with Levy, but eventually admitted to the liaisons. Despite never being labeled a suspect by police, Condit's credibility suffered and he lost his bid for re-election in 2002.
