A Champagne Flute is an elongated glass with a rounded bowl and a long stem. The elongated shape serves to retain the carbonation in the champagne, and, as with all stemware, the stem allows for holding the glass without warming the beverage inside.
History
In the past, the champagne saucer or champagne coupe was used for serving champagne, but this has been replaced by the elongated champagne flutes and the saucers are now generally used for daiquiris and other cocktails. The main exception to this would be weddings, where they continue to be used.
The saucers were considered better for sweet champagnes rather than dry ones, but in both cases, it loses its carbonation more quickly.
