Pennington began his career playing college football with the Marshall Thundering Herd. He helped the team win the Motor City Bowl in 1999, in which he was selected as the game MVP. Pennington was drafted in the first round of the 2000 NFL draft by the New York Jets. He played eight seasons with the team, until August 7, 2008, when the Jets signed veteran quarterback Brett Favre. 2010 Season
Pennington entered the 2010 season with the Dolphins as the backup quarterback to starter Chad Henne. Pennington would sit the bench for the first eight games of the year, not appearing in any of the games, even in a relief role. Chad Pennington made his return to New York to play his former team, the Jets, at the end of the 2008 season. The game took place during the final week of the season and the winner would be champion of the AFC East Division. Pennington led his team to an road victory, sending Miami to the playoffs.
