Certain Girls is the sequel to Weiner's debut novel, Good in Bed, which featured newspaper reporter-turned screenwriter Cannie Shapiro. After discovering and reading her mother's original claim to fame, a tell-all story of her life called, "Big Girl's Don't Cry", Joy becomes even more confused than ever.

  The story, which takes place in Philadelphia, switches between Joy and Cannie's point-of-view chapter by chapter, and some reviewers have noted that there are several close to ties to Weiner's own life.
