In this video, Mahalo's biology expert, Mary Poffenroth, discusses the history of cell theory and what it currently states.
What it Says
Cell theory states that all living organisms are made of cells and that these cells originated from other cells. It also states that all cells contain hereditary information that is passed from cell to cell through cell division. Finally, the theory states that all energy flow occurs in the cell.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI6Gbyxq8eY
History of Cell Theory
In 1838, two scientists, Theodor Schwann and Matthian Schleiden were discussing their research. It is believed that when Schleiden mentioned the nuclei he had observed in his plant cells, Schwann correlated this to the animal cells he had been studying. The next year, Schwann published "Microscopic Investigations on the Accordance in the Structure and Growth of Plants and Animals," which failed to give any credit to Schleiden. In his work, Schwann put forth two theories: cells are the units of structure, physiology and organization and that they function on an individual level and as part of a whole organism. Later in 1855, Rudolph Virchow added the fact that cells replicate through division and arise from pre-existing cells.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI6Gbyxq8eY
