After clubbing 38 home runs in Japan, he attracted the attention of the Detroit Tigers, who brought him back to the United States. In 1990, Fielder belted 51 home runs and 132 RBIs for the team, aweing fans with the distance he was able to put on the ball. Fielder continued to hit over 30 home runs every year through 1996 except for one. In 1996, his contract running out with the Tigers, he was traded to the New York Yankees in the midst of a pennant race. As part of the World Championship team, Fielder hit .391 in the World Series and earned himself his only World Series Ring.

After retiring with over $47 million in assets, Fielder ended up gambling much of his assets away, as revealed in divorce documents filed by his wife in 2004. Fielder is currently estranged from his superstar son, Milwaukee Brewers slugger Prince Fielder.
