CBGB Founder Dies

  • Hilly Kristal, the foundner of New York City's infamous CBGB club, died on August 28, 2007, from complications related to his Lung Cancer.

    Kristal, who was born in 1931, ran several music clubs and festivals in the New York area. Before opening CBGB, he ran the Village Vanguard and co-founded the Schaefer Music Festival, which ran annually from 1968 to 1976. In 1973, Kristal opened CBGB and OMFUG, which acted as a breeding ground for acts such as The Ramones, Blondie, The Talking Heads and Patti Smith. CBGB was closed in 2006 due to rent disputes.
