Caymus Vineyards History
The history of Caymus Vineyards begins in 1885 when the Wagner’s ancestors emigrated from Alsace to America and made their way to San Francisco. After the disruption caused by the earthquake that occurred in 1906 the family made its way to the Napa Valley area and bought farmland.
The Wagners' first winery was built in 1915 to produce bulk wines for distribution. This facility was in operation until Prohibition and during that time managed to increase production to 30,000 gallons a year. In 1941 Charlie Wagner and his wife purchased 73 acres in Rutherford and began growing grapes. During the 1960s the Wagners pulled out fruit orchards located on their land and began putting in more grapes, including a Cabernet Sauvignon clone that came from the vineyard of Nathan Fay.
