Introduction
- This walkthrough is aimed to help the solo player make it through the main story mode for Castle Crashers.
- Since Castle Crashers is a game where the type of character you choose to create has a huge influence in what kind of strategy to employ throughout the game, this guide will attempt to provide tips for all types of characters.
- This guide will also provide the locations for all 26 hidden Animal Orbs and the 12 achievements that the game offers.
-
-
-
Controls
- Castle Crashers uses a two button melee combat system with the X button being used for weak attacks and the Y button being used for strong attacks.
- Press the A button to jump.
- TIP: Press the A Button right as you land if you get knocked down to spring back up.
- By holding RT and pressing one of the face buttons, you can perform magic attacks. The magic attacks vary with each character and you will only unlock more abilities by putting more points into magic.
- Hold down the LT to bring up your shield. Holding up your shield will drastically slow down your movement, but it will protect you from incoming projectiles and most melee attacks that hit you from the front.
- Press the B button to use whatever item you currently have equipped. You can press RB to switch between items in your inventory on the fly.
-
Creating Your Character
- To dismiss Castle Crashers off as just another 2D sidescrolling beat-em-up would be a huge mistake. There is a heavy RPG aspect to the game and as such you should plan out what you want your character to focus on.
- Whenever you level up, you are given points to add to specific traits of your character.
- Increasing strength will cause your character to do more damage with his melee attacks.
- Increasing magic will increase the range and damage of your magic spells, as well as grant you more magic abilities.
- Increasing defense will increase your characters health and defense against attacks.
- And finally increasing agility will make your character faster and cause your arrows to be shot faster and farther.
- If you want to be a melee powerhouse, focus on strength/defense and ignore magic and agility.
- If you want to be a ranged fighter, decide whether you want to be an archer or a straight up mage. There really isn't any point to focus on both. Whatever you decide to be, make sure to dump plenty of points into defense as well so you can take a few hits.
- Of course, you could also become a jack of all trades and spread your points out across all four stats, but from my experience it makes the game much harder than it needs to be.
- NOTE: If you decide to be an Orange Knight, I highly advise that you do not pool your points into magic. The Lava World level is full of enemies that are highly resistant to fire magic, which will make the level extremely difficult.
-
Juggling
- To juggle enemies, simply continuously connect with an aerial attack while holding the direction that the enemy is going.
- With proper timing, you can keep an aerial combo going infinitely by pressing X X X X Y repeatedly. Doing so will cause your character to perform four weak hits, bounce the enemy off the ground and back up into the air, and give your character a height boost as well.
- Use juggling to deal massive amounts of damage to smaller enemies by juggling them into a corner and then keeping the combo going for as long as you can.
- In addition to dealing lots of damage, juggling is also useful for gaining lots of EXP. The more you hit an enemy, the more EXP you gain. Since you can keep on hitting an enemy after their hp has been drained if you are juggling them, you can gain much more exp than usual.
- Juggling also keeps you out of the reach of enemy projectiles, such as arrows or magic.

-
Animal Orbs
- Animal Orbs can be found and bought throughout the game and will provide your character with different kinds of bonuses.
- Once you find an Animal Orb in a level, go back to the blacksmith and enter the ark on the left side to find out what it does.
- There are a total of 26 Animal Orbs to find throughout the game. To view their locations, check the Animal Orb Locations section of this guide.
-
The Weapons Frog
- As you play through Castle Crashers, you'll find many new weapons.
- You can only carry one weapon at a time, so any weapon that you throw away will be stored in the Weapons Frog at the Blacksmith.
- Inside the Weapons Frog, you can check the stats of each weapon that you've found and select the one that suits your playstyle best.
-
-
Arenas
- Arena battles are extremely tough challenges that pit you against wave after wave of a specific enemy type.
- The enemies here are extremely aggressive and will usually spam ranged attacks like there is no tomorrow.
- The reward for beating these are secret characters. For more information about how to unlock characters, check the Secret Characters section of this walkthrough.
- My best advice for going into these is to make sure you're stocked up on potions and to stay off the ground as much as you can so you don't get bombarded by ranged attacks.
-
-
Home Castle
- Once your castle is crashed and you gain control, head up the stairs to the right to begin the level.
- Since you're at too low of a level where your magic will make much of a difference, just dispatch your enemies using juggles and combos.
- TIP: Remember that the more you hit an enemy, the more exp you gain. Try to defeat all of your enemies by juggling them to the sides of the stage and then continue hitting them long after they've died.
- Hidden Animal Orb: After you get the shovel, come back to this level and go back to the very first section of the game. In the upper right hand corner there should be a hay stack where you'll see an X. Dig there to uncover the Animal Orb, Mr. Buddy.
-
Barbarian War
- You'll find that the enemies here like to use arrows a lot more than in the previous stages. Be ready to either pull out your shield with the LT button to block them, or simply dodge them by moving up or down.
- TIP: Cut the tall grass to find food if you're low on health.
- After cutting your way through several waves of barbarians and thieves, you'll be met by the Trojan Ram.
-
BOSS: Trojan Ram
- This wooden ram has two main ways of damaging you: charging into you or hitting you with cannonballs fired via the cannons on its back.
- To avoid the cannonballs, just don't stay within the red circles that appear on the ground for too long. You have about four seconds from the time when the circles appear to the time when the cannonball touches ground.
- While the Ram is charging from side to side, just run up and down to avoid it.
- Once the Ram stops or slows down it will open up to reveal the barbarians inside. Ignore the barbarians and concentrate on dealing damage to the Ram at this time.
- The best way to deal damage is to simply jump and utilize the X X X X Y combo repeatedly. Be wary of the cannonballs and don't stay in the same place for too long to avoid getting hit.
- Eventually the Ram will fall and you'll be able to proceed to the right.
- TIP: Slash at the trees to get some food.
- When you reach the wooden door, bust it down by hacking away at it.
- Defeat this last wave of enemies to advance to the next area.

BOSS: Barbarian Boss
- As fierce as he looks, the Barbarian Boss is actually pretty easy. He has four main attacks.
- His first and most commonly used attacks is a simple punch. When he reaches back and his eyes open wide, move up or down to avoid it.
- His second attack is probably his most dangerous, but it's still easy to avoid. He will jump up, reach for his spiked board on his back, and slam it down. He will then roll over it and wind up on the other side. If it hits, move the right stick back and forth to pull yourself out from the ground.
- His third attack involves him bring his board to his front and extending the spikes. Again, just move up or down once you see him pull out his board.
- His final attack has him drinking a swag from a bottle and then spewing fire as he rockets backwards. I hate to sound repetitive, but since this only hits a linear path, just move up or down to avoid it. Note that he is invulnerable while he's drinking, so just leave him alone and play with some of the small barbarians that are running around.
- Just like the Ram, you should focus on using your aerial combos to deal damage to him while making note of when you need to avoid his attacks.
- Once you take him down, open the treasure chest, collect your loot, and steal a kiss from the first princess to end the level.

Forest Entrance
- Knock the thief off of the dino so that you can jump on it and ride it yourself. Press X while on the dino to swing your weapon and press Y to cause the dino to chomp down on whatever is in front of you.
- This will be your first encounter with "beefy" enemies. This guys are tough for melee oriented characters to deal with since they tend to throw you whenever you get close. Use the dino's bite to deal damage without having to get in the range of their throw.
- TIP: Once again, cut down the tall grass and hack away at the trees to uncover some hidden food.
- Hidden Animal Orb: Look behind the bushes before going into the cave to find the Animal Orb, Owlett.
