Caskets are rectangular boxes with split lids used for the viewing and burial of the deceased. The word casket is actually a euphemism to replace the less agreeable term coffin.
History
While burial dates back the beginnings of mankind, use of caskets or coffins date back to the 600s. Casket sales became a mainstream business in the early 1800s, with the first models made from wood. Steel caskets became more prevalent in the United States in the 1940s. Modern caskets are still produced from wood and steel or can be made from biodegradable materials such as bamboo that allow for natural decomposition of bodies.
Buying Guide
Price is one main consideration when purchasing a casket. Basic models may cost as little as $500, with others ranging in upwards of $5000. Further main considerations are size and style. Caskets can be purchased in smaller models, specifically for pets, infants or children, or over-sized for larger people. Caskets are available with very simple styling all the way to intricate designs featuring artwork depicting scenes of the hobbies or profession of the deceased.
